    Voting System

Good Morning - Editorial in today's ST about the GRC system - compares the validity of GRC to SMC This is NOT to talk about the GRC system per se - but rather, ask the question - why must we stick to First Past the Post at all? Is there another fairer / better / more equitable / more efficient voting method that will achieve the same (or even better) results? If we are looking at the voting system - does it need to be restricted to a discussion of GRC vs SMC at all. Can it also include a discussion of First Past the Post (FPP) "winner take all" vs some form of Proportional Representation?
  3. Education Minister Heng Swee Keat hit back swiftly at opposition Workers' Party claims that residents of Punggol East should vote for them to make the PAP "work hard". "PAP has been working hard to come up with various ways to help Singaporeans even when they was no opposition in Parliament," he told reporters at a community event at Tampines Central Temple. Referring to WP chief Low Thia Kiang's rally message on Saturday that people should vote for WP to keep up the pressure on PAP, Minister Heng turned the tables and said, "People should vote for PAP instead to make the WP work hard. "Voters should look at what the various (PAP) MPs have done and contributed in their constituencies and in Parliament," he said. "And I think they will come to the conclusion that they should vote for the PAP to make the Workers' Party work harder for you". He also took pains to remind voters of Punggol East that it's "not about voting more opposition into Parliament". "It's important to understand what this by-election is about. It's about electing the best candidate who can serve the residents of Punggol East," he said, adding that PAP candidate Koh Poh Koon is a "sincere and hardworking man" who understands the needs of residents and will work hard to improve their lives. Minister Heng said after the last General Election in 2011, Singaporeans had given the PAP the mandate to form the government. And the government has been working hard because "it is our duty and honour". He highlighted the recent changes in education as one example of the PAP listening to ground sentiments. "We have been investing in and improving our education system all these years even when there was no opposition in Parliament," he said. Meanwhile, PAP candidate Koh also addressed WP rival Lee Li Lian's claims that as a female voice, she would bring something different into Parliament if she were elected. "Well, I think selecting an MP really is selecting someone to serve the needs of the wide spectrum of the population, so gender shouldn't really play a role," said Dr Koh at a separate walkabout in Punggol East, where he met church-goers outside St Anne's chuch. "All MPs should take care of different segments of the demographic equally well, so I think the selection shouldn't be about gender per se," said the colorectal surgeon, 40. "And I think even at this present moment, we are all trying our best to also take care of different segments: women, children, elderlies and the youths as well". Dr Koh also said he plans to build a new community centre behind the Rivervale Plaza, on top of a wellness centre for the elderly. "We want to put in place more health screening programmes so we can detect diseases earlier, and to do some preventive kind of management for those diseases in the early stages. What we want to do is to leverage on the building of the new CC to in-build some of these programmes and facilities in place," he said.
  4. Any idea if Polling Day on Saturday is considered as public holiday? ie. free parking at HDB carpark?
  5. 4 Tans got the PEC, Tan Kin Lian, Tan Jee Say, Tony Tan and Tan Cheng Bock. I confirm I am voting for Tan, who are you voting for?
  6. To first-time voters : Walking you through the voting process by Martyn See Tong Ming on Thursday, 05 May 2011 at 19:09 Many of you are first-time voters in this General Elections. I'm not here to persuade you to vote one way or the other. However, in the time between you leaving your house to the marking of your ballot papers in the polling station, something may happen in your mind, and may cause you to change your vote. As a former polling and counting agent for the NSP in my GRC of Tampines in GE06, I like to walk you through the voting process so you can avoid this last minute change of mind. When you arrive at the polling station with your polling card, you will see police officers, some uniformed, others in plain-clothes. Their job is to ensure that no laws are broken - that no one is wearing party logos, shouting slogans or influencing another person to vote one way or the other. Ignore the officers and follow the signs to the polling room. You will then come to a long table manned by election officers, who are likely to be civil servants or teachers on weekend duty. They will wear serious and grouchy expressions. Around the table will be polling agents from the PAP and the opposition. The PAP agents are likely to be wearing all white and the opposition in their party colours - minus party logos. A more likely scenario is that you will only see all-whites, as the opposition may not have recruited enough volunteers to act as polling agents. What is the role of a polling agent? Like the police, he or she is there to ensure that there are no foul play, that no one is unduly influenced, and that all proper procedures are adhered to. Again, ignore these polling agents. Present your IC and your polling card to the election officer at the table. He or she will not be smiling at you. The general tone and atmosphere will be clinical and business-like. Officer 'X' will scrutinise your IC, cast a look at your face, and will announce your name and NRIC number (or your polling card's serial number) to the next officer. The announcement is likely to be quite loud, within earshot of everybody in the room. This is a normal procedure. Do not feel intimidated by this sudden exposure of your presence in the room. Next, officer 'Y' will scan through a long list of names, and after locating yours, he will write your voting slip's serial number next to your name. You will now be handed your voting slip. It will look like a voucher coupon, with a serial number at the top, and the PAP and the opposition party's logos next to blank square boxes. You will be then directed to a makeshift booth with curtains that cover the top half of your body. This is where you cross the 'X' next to the box of your preferred party. You may use the pens provided at the booth, or you may bring your own blue or black pens. No one can see what you write in the booth. After marking your 'X', fold your voting slip inwards, (here, I usually make a silent prayer that my preferred choice wins), and emerge from the curtained booth. You will then be pointed to drop your voting slip in a cardbox within a few steps from the voting booth. There you go. You just casted your first vote! My tip - try to avoid going to the polling station between 9am to 3pm, when you are likely to be stuck in a queue. The polling station is opened from 8am til 8pm. And watch this excellent video made by local human rights group Maruah. 'Is my vote really secret?'
  7. Stop asking stupid questions whether it is secret. Singapore got how many voters? How you trace when the serial number go up to max of 4 numbers. I smell either a conspiracy theory or the stench of daftness when people keep asking this question!
  8. Dear MCF-ers, Please allow me to share and rant about how why we should not vote for the PAP. As resident of Sembawang and a 1st time vote but electoral to vote for Nee Soon GRC, my family and i did not receive the voting letter as on 4th May 2011. When my mum called and asked, we were told by the "RC" that they have misplaced our voting letters and eventually DID NOT managed to send to our mailbox. We were also told to SELF COLLECT our voting letter from Canberra RC instead of them sending it to us knowing the fact that it is their OWN negligence. If the government says that voting is compulsory, why isn't any actions been taken by ensuring citizen's did received the voting letter? If voting letter is not received by citizens, does that means that the electoral area, "Nee Soon GRC" will be lacking of 1 vote if that vote is meant for the opposition? Do note that i have 5 family members including me which is equal to 5 votes. Why isn't the Government ensuring all citizen that has been registered to vote did received the letter? Every votes counts and i wouldn't want to see invaild votes just because of Government carelessness and negligence. No apologises were made by the RC neither the relevant departments. I'm disappointed by how the PAP/Government work for this Election. And my mind is clear, i know where my vote will goes to for GE2011.
  9. Hello brothers and sisters, Do you think the voting in Singapore is really secret and unanimous? Think again. I remember back in 2006? We register at the desk with our NRIC and they compare with their serial numbered list of name/voter. They tear a piece of voting paper with serial number to you, similar to the older cheque book. They will then write your serial number from the name/voter list on the remained stub of this voting paper. This is how they know who vote who. So, is voting in Singapore really secret and unanimous? Pretty easy to know who is behind all this. So where is the fairness? Never has been and never was.
  10. Frankly speaking ah, its my own point of view. Kudos to all the hypes on the Aljunied and Marine Parade. Its is solid! But but, i don't stay there.. I can't vote for them leh. I don't have LTK, Chen Show Mao or even Nicole Seah contesting in my GRC. I been living in my estates for 20++ years. Nothing much changed. Still the same people, buildings, markets, playground etc. All the infra are there, necessities are there. SO, even if the Opp are to come in, how bad can they turn my estate to? I don't see why some MIW are saying we will regret blah blah blah.... The most they let it "rot" there like for the past 5 yrs lo! It has been like that for the past 20 yrs anyway!! BUT what has changed are the policies, the salaries, the cost of living etc. The list goes on, you all know that.... And im really unhappy about the way it is turning out to be! Of all the rallys, nice speeches by them. Really good. Im particularly impressed by what Nicole Seah said. "Do you want a fresh coat of paint at your void deck or a fresh voice in parliament?" This is a good statement to make, to reach out to the whole of SG, rather than her GRC. Too bad i don't see any media coverage on it apart from here n FB... I believe we should vote wisely for the GREATER CAUSE for Singapore, not just for our own "GRC". Plus we all know that CHANGE is the only CONSTANT. When there is no change, end results will always be the same, no matter how u try! I hope to see the sun shine on us soon...

    VOTING

sorry for the noob question.I know that voting in sin is compulsory, but what about other democratic countries?
  12. thinking out loud from a 3rd party perspective 1) Huge popularity of NS vs TPL (on facebook) 2) looking at the initial footage on nomination days, where PAP get jeers and opposition get cheers (very evident in marine parade) 3) many expressing discontent of policies being voiced out over the internet forums (like MCF) and other websites, compared to those who are pro PAP policies 4) colleagues around you expressing discontent and complain about the current state of SG and policies, (of course, there are those who appear nonchalant or pro PAP) Less everyone get carried away On May 7th.. will they put their words into action? Or will they vote for the current government PAP, due to 1) Afraid they will lose their jobs due to lesser opportunities as the top foreigners leave SG 2) For civil servants, the fear that it will hamper their progress and promotion 3) For existing home owners, afraid that their property price will crash 4) For people who qualify for the BTO and have not owned a home, afraid that they will miss out on the queue just because they voted for the opposition 5) For all our senior citizens who have supported PAP all these while and do not see the need to change as they have already benefited from the bite fo the property cherry 6) For those that simply do not care with their nonchalant attitude and thus they do not want change My hunch is still many people will still vote for the PAP, despite all the talk for an alternative voice that are being mentioned online Having said that, I will be happy to be proven wrong, keeping fingers crossed and see, vote wisely

  14. hi, does anyone know? im currently staying overseas, so do i need to vote? thanks,
  15. Voting is Secret P.S. There will be no NRIC tag to your name in the register and the serial numbers are not unique as before. So there are serial numbesr that repeats itself all over other polling station. (Example Tampines have 46 polling station and there will be 46 of the same serial number.) From the elections department website: http://www.elections.gov.sg/voters_ballotsecrecy.html

  21. By Sue-Ann Chia "Yaw Shin Leong says change of heart partly prompted by criticism against him." Personally, I will have a change of heart if what I believed in was proven wrong and not by criticisms from family or friends. WORKERS' Party (WP) leader Yaw Shin Leong, who won praise and criticism alike for disclosing that he had voted for the People's Action Party (PAP) in the 2006 General Election, now regrets the decision. The 32-year-old businessman said his change of heart came after 'introspection and contemplation' as he prepared to mark eight years of activism with the WP on June 24. 'I have woken up from this matrix-like slumber. Voting for a candidate from the ruling regime based on my shallow personal liking and consideration had contravened the very ideals which I had originally entered opposition politics for,' he said in the latest posting on his blog. 'It also contradicted our efforts in urging voters to value the choice provided by opposition candidates.' The Bukit Panjang resident said he would not vote for his MP, Dr Teo Ho Pin, at the next election, and urged Singaporeans to 'vote in solidarity to deny the PAP'. Mr Yaw, the WP's organising secretary, was caught in the eye of an online storm last month after saying that he had voted for Dr Teo over the Singapore Democratic Party's Mr Ling How Doong. Dr Teo was the better candidate, he had said, adding: 'There is nothing inherently wrong for me to vote for an MP, regardless of his/her partisan background, whom in my opinion is the better man who can better serve the interests of Singapore and my community.' That disclosure sparked criticism from opposition supporters who attacked him for voting for the 'other side', and for sending conflicting signals. He was, after all, head of the six-man WP team which stood against a PAP team led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Ang Mo Kio GRC. But others praised him for his political maturity. Mr Yaw said, when contacted on Wednesday, that his change of heart was also prompted by the criticism he faced. Friends scolded him for letting them down. And strangers called or told him during his walkabouts that he had disappointed them. 'I realised I had sent a confusing message to supporters,' he told The Straits Times. 'Being an opposition member, I must put the need for pluralism as a higher priority than voting for a better municipal MP.' While party leaders did not rap him, WP chief and Hougang MP Low Thia Khiang did tell Mr Yaw that in voting for the better candidate, he had fallen into 'the propaganda trap of the PAP'. Mr Yaw said in his blog that the main consideration for many who voted for the WP was 'the need to have a balanced political system and a voice in Parliament...' And he accepted criticism that had Ang Mo Kio voters adopted his 'better candidate' argument, 'my team would not even come close to securing 33.86 per cent of the votes'. Despite what he said in his blog, Mr Yaw told The Straits Times that he did not want Singaporeans to vote for the opposition at all cost too. He said: 'I encourage Singaporeans to vote with their conscience. If they really feel that the opposition candidates are not deserving, don't support them.' Political observer Eugene Tan said Mr Yaw's latest post showed he had decided to put on the hat of an opposition politician instead of being just a 'responsible voter'.
  22. don't worry, this poll has no age limit..
  23. Hi guys for the close price of abv two korean made cars, which car is a better buy? The 1.4l Dohc Aveo or the 1.3l sohc Hyundai getz? I need fair and unbiased views and factual evidence. I need the ppl who wanted to buy a budget car knows which is a better car of the two. Personal: I really am annoyed that many at the korean section is bragging abt their getz and yet i personally feel the aveo is much better car. as it has better FC, bigger space and better engine. plus i can get ABS from the aveo. Looks wise, the aveo looks more better when modded than the getz. I personally see getz as really a small budget car loh at least the aveo looks like a sedan or hatch budget car.
