  1. I had a small accident with this cheapo aluminum ladder. When I first step on it, the step broke off, 6 aluminum rivets are sheared off at the same time. Hurt my feet a little bit and marble floor suffered some chips. Luckily I am not at the top of the steps when it decide to break. I had earlier replaced the top step rivets with bolts and nuts, but the bottom step caught me off-guard. So if you have this kind of ladder, better have a second look, or maybe throw it away for own safety. Granted the ladder was quite old, I didn't use it much, the rivets may have corroded away. But I'd rather have a step ladder that doesn't do this.

  3. Nobody talks about this? Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang to step down as secretary-general by next party election Some say no big deal, is just handing of baton to new leaders, so who will be next and what will and can he do to bring things another level up? http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/workers-party-chief-low-thia-khiang-to-step-down-as-secretary-9374216 SINGAPORE: Workers' Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang will not be contesting the post of secretary-general at the next party election to make way for new blood, he said at the party's 60th anniversary dinner. Channel NewsAsia understands that the next party election is due to be held next year. Mr Low would have been the secretary-general of WP for 17 years when he steps down. Mr Low said he has achieved what he set out to do when was handed the party’s reins in 2001 after Mr JB Jeyaretnam left - renewal of the Workers' Party and making "political progress towards democracy" in Singapore. WP now has a new breed of young politicians, he said. Speaking to more than 1,000 guests and party members on Friday (Nov 3), Mr Low said it was time for the younger leaders to "take over" the party. "It is time for these younger leaders to step up to the steering wheel ... to drive the party forward to continue this walk with Singapore," said Mr Low. "I shall therefore not be contesting the post of secretary-general at the next party election to enable the younger generation of party leaders to take over the party completely." Advertisement Mr Low’s announcement was followed by loud cheers from the crowd. He thanked party members, volunteers, supporters and voters for their support. “Without their trust and support, the Workers’ Party would not have been able to transform from the one-man operator party with one MP to an organised political party of today, with nine MPs in Parliament,” Mr Low said. He urged the next generation of leaders and supporters to draw their strength from the party’s 60-year history. “Resilience is also inherent in our Singapore DNA, enabling our party to make progress despite the winding political journey, its ups and downs in the last 60 years. I’m sure we will stay on course to work with Singapore for generations to come.” Mr Low’s speech came at the end of the dinner, held at a banquet hall at HarbourFront Centre. He spent much of the evening mingling with guests and signing their copy of a commemorative book launched at the dinner, to mark the Party’s 60 years. The book, ‘Walking with Singapore’, documents the party’s history since lawyer David Marshall formed it 60 years ago, about a year after he stepped down as Singapore’s first Chief Minister. MIXED REACTIONS FROM PARTY MEMBERS Mr Low’s announcement came as a surprise to many, although some said the announcement had been expected “sooner rather than later”. One party member said while Mr Low thinks the move is good for party rejuvenation, it is a sad day for many, as he has been a good leader. “It’s almost as if he (Mr Low) is reminding himself that he cannot be (at the helm) forever and that there is a need to have party renewal," a party member who joined in 2011 told Channel NewsAsia. The member added that there are plenty of worthy people within the party ranks, and that “more will step up”. image: data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw== Workers' Party secretary-general Low Thia Khiang signs the party's commemorative book at the party's 60th anniversary dinner. (Photo: Monica Kotwani) NEW TOWN COUNCIL MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE Speaking before Mr Low, Party Chairman Sylvia Lim also announced WP has put in place a new integrated town council management software. Party Chairman Sylvia Lim said the system, developed under the guidance of Town council vice-chairman, Png Eng Huat, is "comparable to the system used by other town councils". Ms Lim said that when the Party won Aljunied GRC in 2011, the WP members of Parliament were "denied the use of the town council management system software" that residents had paid for. "We coped as best as we could with the system in Hougang SMC (single member constituency) for five years" Ms Lim said. Despite the "adverse news" on town council management issues, Ms Lim said there have been no disruptions to residents of Aljunied-Hougang and that the town is progressively being renewed and improved. image: data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw== Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC Pritam Singh at the Workers' Party's 60th anniversary dinner. (Photo: Monica Kotwani) Assistant Secretary-General Pritam Singh also made a speech, paying tribute to members who had played a significant role behind the scenes. The party also screened a trailer for an upcoming documentary about the Workers' Party, which will be released in two parts towards the end of the year. 5. TOKYO—Faced with sluggish domestic growth, Japan’s megabanks are expanding their role in financing global mergers and acquisitions, which hit a record level this year. Japanese banks have long ranked among the world’s top cross-border lenders, and have lent many billions of dollars to Japanese companies also seeking growth abroad through acquisitions. Now the banks are increasingly financing deals that don't involve their compatriot companies. Banks in Japan have had a hand in 59% of global M&A loan packages this year, up from 46% last year and a longtime high, according to data provider Dealogic. That means they have contributed at least a piece of $473 billion worth of global M&A financing such as syndicated loans, the data show. Japanese lenders have helped finance some of the year’s biggest deals. They included Anheuser-Busch InBev’s $104 billion acquisition of SABMiller, announced in October. The country’s top three banks— Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., Mizuho Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group—said they provided about $4 billion each to a $75 billion loan package for that deal. That represents only a fraction of the big three’s total overseas lending. The balance of Mitsubishi UFJ’s overseas lending totaled ¥42.4 trillion ($352 billion) as of Sept. 30, while Mizuho’s was ¥22.6 trillion and SMFG’s was ¥20.5 trillion. The banks don’t disclose the exact amounts of their contributions to M&A loan packages. Still, efforts to ramp up overseas M&A lending are a positive for Japanese banks, said Akira Takai, an analyst at Daiwa Securities, who noted that the money is mostly going to blue-chip companies with higher investment grades. “As dollar funding costs rise, financing for deals is more profitable than normal lending,” he said. With its financial strength, Mitsubishi UFJ, Japan’s largest bank by assets, sees an opportunity to move well beyond financing acquisitions by Japanese companies, said Makoto Kobayashi, head of the banking unit’s financial solutions group. “We’ve seen increasing number of financing deals for non-Japanese M&A activities this year and I feel our presence has been more recognized,” Mr. Kobayashi said. The bank’s alliance with Morgan Stanley has helped it expand its role in global deal financing, Mr. Kobayashi said. The Japanese bank took a 20% stake in Morgan Stanley in 2008, and the two have joint ventures in Japan. “In global deals that Morgan Stanley advises, we get financing even if they [the companies] are not Japan-related,” he said. M&A financing on a global scale presents some challenges for banks more accustomed to working with well-known partners. Takahiko Yasuhara, general manager of the international coordination division at Mizuho Financial Group, said Mizuho works to get to know the biggest companies in regions around the world so it won’t be caught by flat-footed if a deal is struck. “We are often asked by an acquiring company to provide financing for an upcoming deal Friday and to get back to them with a yes or no over the weekend. So to make a quick decision, we have to build close relationships with such companies,” he said. Mizuho contributed to $34 billion in financing toward Teva Pharmaceutical Industries’ $40.5 billion acquisition of Allergan’s generic drugs businesses announced in July. SMFG President Koichi Miyata said he tries to meet a top executive at a major company whenever he goes on a business trip abroad. “Financing deals is about whether you can maintain relationships with a business client…so I’m trying to reach out to contacts during my business trips in Asia, the U.S. and Europe,” Mr. Miyata said. Despite having ample cash on hand, Japanese bankers acknowledge that they could also face a challenge raising U.S. dollars for overseas lending as interest rates rise following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s rate increase this month. Mr. Miyata said SMFG would use dollar deposits and the commercial-paper market, while trying to build dollar holdings by issuing dollar corporate bonds and converting yen.
  6. Hi guys, my car has a keyless start that requires me to step on the brake pedal before the engine starts. Recently, I noticed that when my car is cold, eg in the morning, the brake pedal is very hard to step. I can barely compress it. Many a times, I need to stomp the brakes a 2nd time to start my car as my 1st attempt is too weak. Anything wrong? Or its something I can just ignore?

  12. Dear all these few days I noticed that when I step on the gas, the handbrake light will come on. It will go off after awhile when I am on very very light throttle and just coasting. It will turn off when I brake. Check handbrake is fully down when that happens. Could it be the brake assembly is stuck? Need some experience and advice please. Thanks and regards.
  13. Singapore is moving a step closer to a satellite-based Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system, with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) seeking a contractor to provide vehicles to test technologies developed by four parties. An LTA spokesman said the on-road tests are part of a system evaluation trial for a next-generation ERP system. The on-road tests will begin in July and run until end-November, with an option for a three-month extension. If the entire trial goes smoothly, sources said that the LTA could call for a tender to build the new ERP system in 2014 or 2015. source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_772338.html
  14. Hi all i have a Gen2 about 6 years old. Sometimes i encounter a behaviour with my car. When my car stopped at a junction and when i wanted to move off, i stepped on the accelerator the car will vibrate (like those manual cars going to stall) and there's no throttle at all. But when i release the pedal, the car continues to move slowly normally in Drive gear mode. i noticed that when i try to step more on the pedal when moving off or in very slow speed (probably in 1st gear), i will not experience this. This behaviour is getting more frequent. Everytime i need to switch off the engine and switch on again den i can drive off. i just went for my servicing last month where i changed the engine oil and automatic gear oil. anyone knows what might be the cause of this? Thank You

  16. Speculation at this point. But I am more interested to know why she was qualified to run TH in the first place. ----- Jun 10, 2011 Ho Ching may step down in August: FT report By Aaron Low Asked about the report that chief executive Ho Ching is planning to step down, Temasek said it would not comment on speculation. TEMASEK Holdings chief executive and executive director Ho Ching may step down in August, according to the Financial Times (FT). The front-page report, quoting unnamed sources, said her departure could come soon after Temasek releases its annual report next month. Temasek is expected to announce gains on its portfolio, which stood at $186 billion last year, when it issues the report for the financial year ending March 31. Asked about the FT report, a Temasek spokesman said yesterday: 'We decline to comment on speculation.' Ms Ho, 58, the wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, has been in the top job for eight years. She has ranked high on several lists of Asia's most powerful women. Analysts said yesterday it would be as good a time as any for her to step down, although some fund managers were not convinced that Temasek would make such a big change now.
  17. Dear all Here below is the documented steps in doing your own exhaust wrapping. It involves patience and alittle prespiration. I'll keep the narration short. You'll see from the beginning I still have my old wrapping on and it's cracking up. It wasn't well done by the shop previously. I removed the old layer of skin and used a metal brush on the surface to remove loose debri. My material came as a sheet and it's not as superior as Thermotec but it works good enough. The contact surfaces of the gasket and the manifold and block has to be cleaned and prep for application of the hi temp silicon application later. The strips are cut at 2" wide and about one metre long and presoaked in water. Doesn't matter how long as long as it's wet thru. Remove, squeeze dry and start by the portion nearest to the block. It's easier to do from top to bottom rather than vice-versa. Once you'll got a strip secured, use binding wire to secure the ends and in the middle if you as particular as me. Upon completion, fit manifold back with the application of the hi-temp silicon available at most hardware stores at less than S$8. I used the silicon on both sides of the gasket pc that was stock on the vehicle. Once done, stand back and start her up. Dun fret when you see smoke. It's the water vapor from the heat on the manifold. It's gonna take sometime. (Half an hour of light driving around to remove the water completely. Have fun. Regards Lester
  18. WP's break thru at aljunied GRC is a huge step forward however i'm really sad to see mr chaim lost his GRC fight and also potong pasir, where he had served 27 yrs. wat sway the residents in potong pasir really buffs me. considering mr chaim had fight so hard for the past 27 yrs. end of the day, pple like WKS, MBT, RL, VB are still happily in their almost 3m/yr post wif no contribution to the country. and worse off, a certain kate spade lady is going thru by the B-system (mind u, not BUDDY but BACK-DOOR system) and she is going to be the voice for pple in MP GRC. for someone whom cant even handle a simple facebook account well, i haf serious doubt she can head the ward. but borrow a phrase from MM, voters has 5 yrs to regret and repent. hopefully by then, our fellow singaporeans could grow some courage (or rather balls) and put their words into action. lastly, good-bye to mr chiam. u're a true legend and a fighter for fellow singaporeans. i salute u and ur hardwork will not be forgotten.
