When one thinks of Godzilla movies, one imagines an oversized amphibious dinosaur generating a terrifying heat ray from its mouth and fighting with other oversized monsters. Meh, nothing special, right? Wrong. Here’s why Godzilla Minus One should be an action movie you should definitely catch. In this version, the timeless clash between monster and man is once again set against the tumultuous backdrop of post-war Japan. But, unlike typical action films that dive headfirst into destruction and battle scenes, this movie takes a surprisingly introspective turn. Yes, it’s on Netflix. No, I won’t spoil anything for you. The story delves deep into the emotional and psychological scars left by World War Two, at a time when Japan was grappling with the aftermath of devastation. It's a poignant exploration of a nation attempting to rebuild not only its cities but its very soul. What's truly compelling to me about Godzilla Minus One is its commitment to human stories amidst the chaos. The film introduces you to characters shaped by tragedy and driven by a desire for survival and renewal. Their paths intertwine with the looming threat of Godzilla, providing a narrative that is rich with emotional depth. As the film unfolds, you are invited to witness the human struggle from various angles: A soldier haunted by his past mistakes, a young woman searching for hope amidst the post-war ruins, and families torn apart and seeking solace within the remnants of their former lives. It is also pretty refreshing to see post-World War Two from a Japanese perspective. We mostly see the action and fighting from the American perspective, which can get pretty stale, pretty fast. ~ Fremont (Images by Wallpaper Abyss/Alpha Coders)

Source: https://www.straitstimes.com/business/no-one-wants-used-evs-making-new-ones-a-tougher-sell-too BERLIN – The shift away from cars with dirty combustion engines is running into a new hurdle: Drivers do not want to buy used electric vehicles (EVs), and that is undermining the market for new ones, too. In the US$1.2 trillion (S$1.6 trillion) second-hand market, prices for battery-powered cars are falling faster than for their combustion-engine cousins. Buyers are shunning them due to a lack of subsidies, a desire to wait for better technology, and continued shortfalls in charging infrastructures. A fierce price war sparked by Tesla and competitive Chinese models are further depressing values of new and used cars alike, threatening earnings at rivals like Volkswagen (VW) and Stellantis. Because most new vehicles in Europe are sold via leases, automakers and dealers who finance these transactions are trying to recover losses from plummeting valuations by raising borrowing costs. That is hitting demand in some European markets that were in the vanguard of the shift away from fossil fuel-powered propulsion. Some of the biggest buyers of new cars, including rental firms, are cutting back on EV adoption because they are losing money on resales, with Sixt dropping Tesla models from its fleet. “When a car loses 1 per cent of its worth, I make 1 per cent less profit,” said Mr Christian Dahlheim, who heads VW’s financial services arm. The issues with second-hand EVs, he added, have the potential to destroy billions of euros in earnings for the broader industry. The problems are expected to intensify in 2024, when many of the 1.2 million EVs sold in Europe in 2021 will come off their three-year leasing contracts and enter the second-hand market. How companies tackle this problem will be key for their bottom lines, consumer confidence and ultimately decarbonisation – including the European Union’s plan to phase out sales of new fuel-burning cars by 2035. “There isn’t used-car demand for EVs,” said Mr Matt Harrison, Toyota Motor’s chief operating officer in Europe. “That’s really hurting the cost-of-ownership story.” Companies can funnel battery-powered cars into mobility offerings and ride-sharing start-ups, but there is limited demand from these businesses. Unwanted combustion cars often end up in Africa, where their poor state causes pollution issues. That market is largely shut to EVs because it has no viable infrastructure to charge them.

Yahoo : K-pop star Goo Hara found dead at her home K-pop star Goo Hara was found dead at her home on Sunday, South Korean police confirmed. Goo, a former member of girl group Kara, was discovered at her home in Seoul early Sunday evening, officers said. The exact cause of death was still under investigation, they added. South Korea has one of the world's highest rates of suicide which, according to recent government figures, is among the top causes of death for those under 40. The 28-year-old's death comes a month after Sulli -- another K-pop star and Goo's close friend -- took her own life after a long struggle with online bullying. The singer had posted a tearful message on her Instagram shortly after Sulli's death, grieving the passing of her friend. In messages posted on social media, fans mourned Goo's death, with one writing: "I hope you have a good sleep in heaven without any worries." After performing in Kara from 2008 to 2015, she focused on her solo career after the group broke up and had just completed a tour of Japan with her latest release. Manchester United have once again signalled a restart with the sacking of Ten Hag, and just days later, announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim, who will join midway through the first half of the current season from Sporting Lisbon. Back to square one yet again for the Red Devils who, despite being one of the most successful clubs in England and biggest clubs in the world, have not won a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Since then, they’ve gone through a whole host of managers with varying degrees of success. My exact reaction to Ten Hag's early dismissal, after the United hierarchy publicly backed him in the summer and gave him a new contract 2013 to 2016 - David Moyes was Sir Alex’s immediate successor, lasting just 10 months as United trudged to seventh place. His replacement was three-time Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, who won the FA Cup but faced the sack two days afterwards. 2016 to 2022 - Jose Mourinho, arguably the biggest name on this list, won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season, but fell out with certain players and members of the board, and bade United goodbye a week before Christmas in 2018. Club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stepped up and lasted the longest despite not winning anything, but was dismissed just five weeks shy of three years at United. Ralf Rangnick was brought in as an interim coach for the rest of the 21/22 season. 2022 to 2024 - Erik Ten Hag came from Ajax and despite winning the League Cup in his first season and the FA Cup in his second, was shown the door ten games into the 24/25 season after a poor run of results despite signing a new deal in the previous transfer window. The last Portuguese manager to manage United, and in my opinion, the best hire since Sir Alex's retirement However, with the investment of INEOS and its owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, himself a proclaimed United supporter and who assumed the responsibilities of the footballing aspects of the club, the club moved fast to snap up Amorim, who reportedly has been on their radar for quite some time. This marks a positive change of United identifying and signing targets that would benefit the club in the long run, much unlike when the Glazers, United’s majority shareholders and much-hated owners (with good reason), simply threw fat, lucrative contracts at big stars whose light were fading, clearly to boost shirt sales. Having been poorly run for the last eleven years, and one might argue even before Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the future looks bright for the Mancunian club. Gone are the days of signing has-beens. United’s past few transfers have been with the future in mind – think Rasmus Hojlund, Leny Yoro, and Joshua Zirkzee – and many academy graduates have been promoted to the first team and have had a big impact – think Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. A young and vibrant United team overcame current title-holders and city rivals Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final, with academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo (not in shot) scoring the winner Given new gaffer Amorim’s track record at Sporting Lisbon, winning the club’s first league title in two decades and repeating the feat three years later, and going toe-to-toe with Europe’s elite in the Champions League despite having a significantly lesser budget, he will presumably have a lot of credit in the bank, even with the ficklest of United supporters. With the Old Trafford faithful yearning for an exciting style of play and the pacy, counterattacking football of the successful United teams of yesteryear, the Portuguese manager seems like a good fit for the fallen giants. Only time will tell if he can reap long-term success and bring back the glory days or end up as just another failed United project. - Fremont - Images from Twitter

Gastrodiplomacy: Taking over the world one food at a time?
bobthemob posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
I was randomly Googling trivia facts about Japan, and one interesting one came up: "Up to the 1970s, there was no salmon sushi. Norwegians introduced salmon to the sushi makers in Japan in the 1980s." That's, interesting. After all, I rather suspect that when most people think of sushi or sashimi, salmon would be the first fish that comes to mind. Heck, even Apple's emoji suggestion for sushi on my Macbook Pro Touch Bar (🍣) features a salmon nigiri alongside a tuna one. Salmon has become quite synonymous with sushi/sashimi, and yet it wasn't always this way. I went to Google a little more, and the story behind it is rather fascinating (here's a quick and totally non-exhaustive summary). To be clear, it's not that salmon did not exist in Japan before the 80s. It just wasn't prepared raw. This is due to the parasites found in fished salmon, and the lack of widespread refrigeration to kill those parasites meant that salmon was only served cooked. Additionally, the presence of these parasites also meant that salmon had a reputation (in Japan) of being a 'cheap' fish. "Often used to fill out cheap meals, salmon was the poor man’s fish in Japan." (This article is a worthwhile read.) It's fascinating that it was Norway, of all places, who decided to change that. And explicitly so - the government created 'Project Japan', with the specific intent of exporting farmed salmon to Japan. Norway's burgeoning (and overflowing) fisheries meant that it needed to find a big export market, and Japan was identified as a suitable candidate. The 10-year-long marketing and promotion effort by the Norwegian government helped changed Japanese public perception about salmon, and has directly contributed to the popularity of salmon nowadays as a sushi/sashimi option. Which brings us to the topic of gastrodiplomacy. This particular case of salmon sashimi appears more economically driven, but we can certainly extrapolate outwards and look at other instances of how food is used a a tool for cultural export. Korean food is one that immediately springs to mind. I was at Amoy Street for lunch a week ago, and was reminded of just how many Korean restaurants seem to have popped up in recent times. Amoy Street/Telok Ayer Street and Tanjong Pagar Road are two places where it feels like Korean restaurants make up the majority of eateries, and this is probably true in other parts of Singapore as well. Did Singaporeans suddenly develop a heavy appetite for Korean cuisine? Or does it seem like this Korean cuisine explosion happened in parallel with a notable increase uptick in broader Korean cultural interest, such as music and TV shows? (The answer is yes.) It's no coincidence, and neither is this unique to Singapore. A 2022 New York Times story highlighted that Korean restaurants worldwide increased 262% (!!!) from 2009 to 2017, and it was a result of explicit efforts by the Korean government. In 2010, the Korean Food Promotion Institution was established with the purpose of improving the overall well-being of Korean people and the country's economic status through globalising Korean cuisine. And I think we can all agree that it has been rather successful, as part of the greater effort to export Korean culture (just look at how big K-Pop and K-dramas have become). Other countries also engage in this. For example, Thailand provided state-backed loans to local chefs to open restaurants outside the country. Gastrodiplomacy can be a powerful tool in building a nation's global reputation, and it's all part of the broader attempt to build soft power. Singapore almost certainly does it, too! One wonders how much of the attention on our hawker food (and the accompanying Michelin stars and guides and what not) is part of a broader effort to expand Singapore's visibility and cultural identity. Thinking about it now, I also wonder if there's a particular reason it feels like there is now a Mala stall in what seems like every single coffee shop nowadays. Soft power is not a remotely new concept (and is a much broader and deeper topic that I don't have the intellectual bandwidth to explore right now). But it is quantifiable, to a certain extent. The Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index is a study that measures perceptions of nations around the world, and effectively measures and charts a country's popularity. There are plenty of different factors that go into it, but 'food' is one specific attribute that was added in 2023. (You can view the full report here.) In 2023, Singapore ranked 26, two places behind South Korea. Number one? Japan. One wonders how much they have to thank Norway for that. ~ Desmond Photos from Unplash- 1 comment

StarHub customers affected by home broadband disruption can register for one-time 20% rebate on monthly fee source: https://mothership.sg/2020/04/starhub-broadband-disruption-rebate/ StarHub's internet service was disrupted in many areas of Singapore on Apr. 15. Users faced intermittent access for at least seven hours from around 11am till just after 8pm. StarHub's apology StarHub has apologised for the service disruption, saying that it "apologises unreservedly for the inconvenience caused" in a statement issued on Apr. 16. StarHub acknowledged that more people were staying home to work and study because of the nationwide circuit breaker measures currently in place, and said that in this time, it would take network resilience and quality especially seriously. It also said that StarHub’s top priority during the disruption was to restore services swiftly for affected customers. One-time 20 per cent rebate StarHub is offering affected customers a one-time 20 per cent rebate on their Home Broadband monthly fee. Affected customers will need to register for this rebate on a dedicated website, and StarHub said that it would announce the details to customers "soon". What caused the disruption? StarHub said that a cyber attack was ruled out as a possible cause of the disruptions. Instead, the service disruptions were cause by two separate, unrelated incidents. Faulty equipment issue StarHub said that at around 11am, some customers in the North and North-East regions faced a 20-minute disruption to their fibre services. This was due to "an isolated fault in a piece of network equipment." According to StarHub, back-up equipment took over immediately, and affected services resumed progressively for customers. The faulty equipment was then replaced with a new unit, and services were closely monitored for stability. Network issue The second incident happened at about 3:50pm, StarHub said. StarHub discovered a network issue with its Domain Name Servers(DNS) that serve home broadband customers, and there was an intermittent issue in performing queries to the DNS. This resulted in some customers experiencing slow, or no internet access. StarHub said that the issue was rectified, and that affected services were fully restored at 8:20pm on Apr. 15. Peter Kaliaropoulos, Chief Executive, StarHub, said: Action taken by StarHub Kaliaropoulos said that StarHub has taken immediate steps to prevent a recurrence. StarHub said that it is "cooperating fully" with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) in investigations, and welcome any necessary infrastructure audit by IMDA. “We assure our customers that our network traffic is well below available capacity and ample redundancy has been built into our network to cater for high service levels to be delivered consistently", Kaliaropoulos added.

Interesting education program in the land of rising sun. (not the type @Jamesc is very familiar with though hahahaha) Source: https://soranews24.com/2024/05/25/himakajima-the-japanese-island-with-one-traffic-light-that-only-turns-green-once-a-year/ People tend to imagine the urban sprawl of Tokyo when envisioning Japan, but the country has a vast countryside too, with places that can give the quaintest parts of the world a run for their money. One such place is the small island of Himakajima a few dozen kilometers south of Nagoya, in between Ise Bay and Mikawa Bay. It’s a picturesque little island with nice beaches, tasty octopus, and a population that tends to hover around 2,000. In addition, one of its more unique features is its lone set of traffic lights on the southeastern coast. While there are countless small towns that only have “the traffic lights,” Himakajima’s are special in that they only turn green – or “blue” as they call it in Japanese – on one day out of the year. For the other 364.25 days, these lights are in a constant state of flashing yellow in the direction of the coastal road and flashing red on the road leading into Hakajima East Port, making them equivalent to a pair of stop signs in the north-south direction. The reason is that these stop lights were never intended to serve any sort of traffic control. They were installed in 1994 at the request of the Himaka Traffic Safety Association to help teach the island’s children how to follow the signals in case they move out to a big city someday. Prior to the traffic lights, a smaller prop was used to teach kids but they always felt a disconnect between it and the real thing. Now, for one day in May, the lights are set to turn green so the kids can practice using them properly and safely. This year the green light was activated on May 21, and once again children congregated at the intersection to get a feel for the timing of it and practice looking right, left, and right again before raising their arm and crossing the street. One young girl told reporters that she was surprised how tricky it was when the light turned red while she was walking her bike across the zebra stripes. If you’d like to witness this yearly event, it might be hard to pinpoint the exact date, but the lights have their own page on the Himakajima website for a good place to start. Even if you do miss it, there’s still a lot to see, do, and eat there so you won’t be disappointed. It serves as a reminder that Japan isn’t all robots, 3-D billboards, and fax machines.

How exactly does one mess up exiting the car park this badly?
SGCM_editorial posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Now, forgive me if I'm not making sense here, but isn't it common sense to go a little slower in underground car parks, where the road is a little slippery and it makes your tyres screech like a banshee at every 90 degree corner you have to make a turn at. Especially at the exits and entry lanes, where the road is narrow and there are humps every few metres to deliberately keep your speed low. So, please tell me how an accident like this could happen, as per the video below. This accident happened yesterday, and this video is actually taken by me as I witnessed the aftermath of the accident as I was leaving IKEA Alexandra around 4pm. According to a friend who left earlier than I did, this accident definitely happened before 3.35pm, and Singaporeans being Singaporeans, it obviously did cause a bit of a wait to leave the car park because everyone was slowing down to gawk at the accident and possibly to take down the licence plate numbers to... buy... 4D..... (why, people, why? That's just schadenfreude) So as you can see from the video, the Volvo somehow managed to hit both Volkswagens (2-for-1), the first car being clipped in the right rear quarter while the second car, was, well, kissed pretty hard in the front. From what can be seen of the Volvo, it doesn't look too good for it either. The front left wheel seems to be partially dislodged and who knows what's going on with what isn't visible to the camera. Fortunately for the Volvo driver, in spite of their inability to drive properly in a car park, Volvo has invested tons of money into making their cars really safe, as seen here, here, here and here. Unfortunately, I don't think Volvo has figured out a way to account for a less-than-attentive/capable driver who can't concentrate in a narrow car park and ends up causing a proper headache for everyone involved. All in, the damage to all three cars look to be pretty bad. But the only thing worst than this accident was the line of cars along Alexandra Road that couldn't enter the IKEA carpark because this accident had basically blocked off the only way to get down into the car park. I didn't get footage of that, but I don't envy the IKEA staff member who was standing in the hot sun explaining to irate drivers why they couldn't enter the car park. Here's hoping that guy didn't have it too bad, because we all know how Singaporeans can get if they aren't queuing for something they enjoy, like bubble tea or bakkwa. An ambulance was seen arriving just as I was leaving, so here's hoping that if anyone was injured, their injuries were minor, and let's all practice safe and attentive driving not only while on the roads, but in car parks as well. Especially on Sundays at IKEA, because there are waaaaaay too many people there already and the last thing we all need is for someone to lose their temper over something trivial.- 4 comments

hopefully no one is taking this red yeast rice pill here. 😣 Japan dietary supplement recalled amid investigation into two deaths and 100 hospitalisations Cholesterol-lowering supplements containing ‘beni koji’ recalled by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical over possible link to kidney disease Beni kōji: One dead and dozens sick after taking red yeast pill in Japan A major Japanese drugmaker has said it is investigating a death and dozens of hospitalisations that could be linked to its red yeast rice pills. At least 76 people were admitted to hospital after taking the beni kōji fermented rice products, the firm says. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical reported the illnesses after issuing a voluntary recall of five products last week. The firm urged customers to stop using the pills, which were advertised as cholesterol-lowering supplements. Kobayashi said it suspected that the problem may have come from previously undetected toxic substances in moulds used in production. Beni kōji is rice fermented with monascus purpureus, a species of reddish-purple mould. While advertised as a health supplement for high cholesterol and blood pressure, it's also widely used as a traditional colour dye for food products. On Tuesday, the company issued a statement announcing the "causal relationship" of its Red Yeast Cholesterol Help product and the customer's death. It said it had received a message from the bereaved family saying the person had died from kidney disease and had been using the Red Yeast Cholesterol Help product the past three years. The firm said there had been a regular mail order. "Although we are diligently confirming the facts and causal relationships, we would like to report this from the perspective of prompt information disclosure," Kobayashi said. "Our company has always prioritised the health of our customers above all else and we sincerely apologise for this situation." Affected customers had reported symptoms such as changes in the colour of urine, swelling in their limbs and fatigue. The company began an investigation after a doctor alerted them to reported health problems in January. It has since established a hotline for customers. Its Red Yeast Cholesterol Help product debuted on shelves in February 2021. The company has so far sold more than a million packets, Japanese media reported. The firm has also supplied beni kōji as a food ingredient to food and beverage makers around the world. It warned companies of the risk last week. None have reported any illnesses among customer so far. But one major beverage maker, Takara Shuzo Co, announced it would recall a sparkling sake product that had been coloured with the supplied beni kōji.

Singapore ‘open to’ idea of one-off rise in vehicle population, with higher usage-based charges: Chee SINGAPORE is open to reviewing the idea of a one-off increase in its vehicle population, spread over a few years and accompanied by higher vehicle-usage charges to prevent congestion, said Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat on Tuesday (Mar 5). But the trade-offs “are not straightforward, and need to be studied carefully before a decision is made”, he added during the debate in Parliament on his ministry’s budget. Member of Parliament Saktiandi Supaat had asked if distance-based charging could allow Singapore to increase the total vehicle population while still achieving its car-lite vision. Chee said his ministry was “open to reviewing the idea” of a one-off increase with higher charges. These usage-based charges could include location and time-based fees – as with the existing Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system – or distance-based charging, where road users pay depending on how far they travel. “However, it is not feasible to (rely only) on usage-based charges to prevent traffic congestion, as these would have to be set at very high rates, which might not be acceptable to many car owners,” he said. Singapore would still need other ownership controls and measures such as parking charges, he added. He also noted that taxi, private-hire car and delivery drivers would face higher usage-based fees as they travel longer distances. “We will need to examine the impact on these groups, though usage-based charging is, in principle, a fair approach,” he said. The Land Transport Authority began the roll-out of the new ERP 2.0 system’s On-Board units last November. These units are equipped with satellite-based technology that can support distance-based charging, though the statutory board said at the time that there were “no immediate plans” to transition away from the current system. https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/companies-markets/transport-logistics/singapore-open-to-idea-of-one-off-rise-in-vehicle-population-with-higher-usage-based-charges-chee hmmm ...

Tearin' Up My Heart: Unpacking one Millennial's tragically sentimental nostalgia
bobthemob posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Joey Fatone and AJ McLean just announced a 2024 tour. For many people, those names may mean nothing. But for those who know (yes Millennials, I’m talking to you), this is BIG NEWS. Perhaps a little more context: Joey Fatone was (is?) one member of *NSYNC, while AJ McLean was (is?) from the Backstreet Boys. Ahh, should sound a lot more familiar now. Quit playing games Before there was BTS and Seventeen (no clue myself, but my colleagues assure me they exist and are really popular), before even One Direction or Jonas Brothers, there was, of course, what I would consider the Golden Era of boy bands - the 90s to early 00s. I would say that, of course. I am a product of the 90s. Quite literally - born in 1990, and growing up exactly to this sort of music on the radio. The Jackson 5 was probably the first widely recognised and loved boy band that combined singing, dancing and magical harmonies Of course, boy bands did not start with the Backstreet Boys nor *NSYNC. Not even 80s icons like Boyz II Men or New Kids on The Block. Wind the clock way back, and the history of boy bands (defined as a group of well, boys, that sing and dance) date back to the early 1800s and African-American barbershop quartets. However, it was probably only into the 1960s that boy bands (or at least one) entered the general popular (and international) consciousness. The Jackson 5, a band of brothers headlined by a little kid called Michael (you might have heard of him). Don't wanna lose you now But, this isn't a history lesson. I (desperately) want to talk about the 90s - my era. It might have been the height of boy band-mania, and also when the entire notion and concept of a boy band was most concretised. With curated and coordinated outfits, highly produced and polished pop music (in contrast to the R&B leanings of earlier acts), elaborate dance moves, and a general pretty-boy aesthetic precisely engineered to appeal to screaming pre-teens, boy bands dominated the 90s and early 00s. There is undoubtedly a kitsch-ness to it, but I believe that is its inherent appeal - sincere in their simplicity, unyielding in their unoriginality, and united in their ubiquity. Growing up in the 90s and 00s, it was hard to avoid them - perhaps also owing to the sheer number of boy bands then. They were all over the radio, we all bought the CDs at the Heeren HMV, even the music videos were all over MTV (remember MTV??). In many ways, these groups were larger than life. Denim on denim on denim. Could there be a more iconic image of the 90s? And they leant fully into it. I am not sartorially opposed to all-white suits or even a full denim get up (both iconic to this day), but let's be honest, even for the bravest fashionistas among us, that's a choice. And personally, I find all of it quite charming - there's a tragic earnestness to the pop music zeitgeist of the 90s that's at once both hilarious and heart-warming. And even till today, I am unashamed and unwavering in my love for these bands, no strings attached. Thinking of you Why then, does such music still resonate in 2024? Nostalgia is definitely part of it. I went for the Backstreet Boys concert in 2019 and it is still one of the best nights of my life. Nostalgia is a powerful emotion that taps into deep seated memories - even as my music tastes have grown, expanded and evolved (though some may argue otherwise, including my Spotify wrapped), these songs are deeply ingrained in my musical consciousness. If Taylor Swift can get wildly excited about *NSYNC reuniting in 2023, then I sure as hell can too... But it's also the music. Yes, the music was mostly quite cookie cutter and somewhat generic (one Max Martin did write most of it), but the simple and memorable melodies, the catchy and often cheesy lyrics, and sing-along refrains and the inevitable up-key final chorus - it is pure, unadulterated, nostalgia-laced delight. You may not have heard the song in ages, but when it comes on the radio (sometimes on Gold 90 FM, my god I'm getting old), you know all the words, and you SING IT. And I do also think that the appeal is precisely because it harkens back to a simpler time and evokes feelings from a "better" time. As we grow older and more cynical, chiselled down by the day-to-day grind of work life and all the perils of adulthood, there is no doubt a desire for that return to child-like innocence (there may even be a psychoanalytical element to this, but that's a rabbit hole I certainly do not want to go down). These songs and these bands evoke feelings of simplicity and naivety. Even if there is an element of rosy retrospection, where we remember history in a more positive light, I don't think that's a bad thing at all. It allows moments of sentimental reprieve, incomplete as they may be, allowing you to bask in a corny yet warm fuzzy feeling. The lyrics don't actually make much sense, but its a defining song from a defining boy band that makes EVERYONE sing along It was a simpler time, even musically. As songs get more complicated and even boy bands more elaborate (Seventeen has 13 members, which is 1. way too many and 2. eponymously confusing), there is something pleasingly simple and comforting about 5 boys singing 5 broadly familiar songs about the same damn thing (it's always l-o-v-e, isn't it). Drowning (in sentimentality) Admittedly, there is something a little bit tragic or cynical about these 20-year old boy bands still touring in 2024 singing songs from the 90s. Does it feel like them milking past fame? Yes. Is it music that is probably no longer relevant or popular these days? Yes. In a world like this, is it just a little bit cringey? Sure. Would I still go? Every. Single. Time. Music means many different things to different people. Our taste in music is rarely singular - I predominantly listen to rock, but there are days that I just want to listen to classical music, R&B, or maybe a bit of slow blues. A WhatsApp (yes, we're not young enough to use Telegram) conversation only Millennials can have, or will understand... But 90s/00s boy bands will always have a special place in my heart, a feeling I think (or perhaps more accurately hope) other Millennials will understand. Even if they may now be Backstreet Uncles, the music of that era is uniquely the one that tugs at my tragically nostalgic heart strings. So I say a little prayer (wrong band reference, I know) that the Joey/AJ tour somehow some way makes its way to Singapore. I'll be there, this I promise you. ~ Desmond -
Buying my second motorcycle was both easier and harder than getting my first one
jeresinex posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
"You'll know better next time" is a line I've often heard, especially after a maiden attempt goes wrong. I kept repeating this mantra as I set about searching for my second motorcycle. My first bike was a Yamaha YBR125, which cost less than $1,300 and only had six months left on its COE. It wasn't in the best condition either. But I got it because it would (and did) work well as a beginner's motorcycle. Even before I 'retired' it last October, I had already started thinking about what I needed from my second bike. Something with a bit more power so that it more easily keeps pace with traffic. Something with better tyres and suspension so that it's more comfortable. And a taller seat height for better visibility. Photo: Jon Tyson, Unsplash My requirements were straightforward, and my only limitation was how much I wanted to spend. I'm okay with a bike with six to twelve months left (since this is for training purposes), and I'm also okay with spending around $2,000. I thought finding a bike within these parameters would be a cinch, but I was wrong. The search begins Since I'm a newbie who's used to a standard/naked bike, I looked for models like the Honda CBR190R, Yamaha FZN150, Yamaha FZ16 and FZ16 ST. I kept an open mind and looked for Class 2B scooters as well, despite preferring a manual bike. I don't spend the entire day searching Carousell, but when I do have a block of time, I'll spend it trawling ads. Weeks went by. There were many ads with those aforementioned models, but none of them could meet my meagre budget. A friend suggested I search for a Honda CBR150R or Yamaha R15 V1, so I did. However, the more I looked, the more I wanted to increase my budget. The next thing I knew, I was considering machines that cost nearly $5k. Photo: Jon Schnobrich, Unsplash Instead of being excited, I began to feel the sian-ness creeping in. But if I didn't keep going, I'd never get another two-wheeler. I learned to distinguish between what was likely to be good and what was probably going to be bad. Bikes that looked decent but whose ads had been up for weeks or months were either too pricey relative to other offerings or weren't in good condition. Conversely, bikes that didn't stay unsold for long were a hot commodity. Not surprisingly, some of them were purchased only to be immediately resold at an even higher price. Capitalism at its finest. A return to reason Class 2B sportbikes are not for me. Since my goal is to acquire a Class 2 machine in 2025 or 2026, I will minimise my expenses in the meantime. If I sink more moolah into a 2B bike or purchase an expensive 2A motorcycle later, that will put me further away from my goal. Back to basics - and a $1.5k budget - then. And this time, I only looked for an FZ16. I also told myself not to stress if a potential bike was quickly snapped up. If it's meant for me, I'll end up buying it. I won't have a perfect machine given my constraints. But I know that while leaking forks might still be okay, leaking oil or other fluids are a no-no. Blue-coloured exhaust smoke in a four-stroke machine is also bad, because that means oil is being burned. The writer's new old motorbike is a 2014 Yamaha FZ16 My patience was eventually rewarded. A few weeks ago, an FZ16 listed for $1,500 appeared. Its COE is valid till November this year, and more importantly, the owner was willing to negotiate the price. I viewed the bike the same evening. Aside from worn grips and scratches on the bodywork, it seemed relatively fine. After test-riding it in the seller's estate, he agreed to sell it to me for $1,350. She's not perfect and will need TLC to keep running. But I think we'll work well together. Our first two rides have been smooth, and I hope our succeeding ones are just as seamless. Finally! The search took longer than expected, but it was a lesson in patience and more importantly, staying focussed on my goal. Now that I know better, perhaps buying my next bike, be it new or used, will be an easier process.-

Porsche Is One Step Closer To Producing Synthetic Fuel This could save the combustion engine. With new combustion car sales being banned within the next decade to lower global emissions, many automakers are switching to EVs. Porsche has already started embracing electrification with the Taycan and will launch an electric version of the Macan next year. At the same time, the German automaker is also fighting to save the combustion engine. Last year, Porsche announced a partnership with Siemens Energy to develop a new, almost carbon-neutral synthetic fuel that will extend the life of the combustion engine. After all, the bans will only apply to new combustion car sales, so millions of gas-powered cars will still be on the road polluting the environment. Now, Porsche is one step closer to producing synthetic fuel as construction of the Haru Oni manufacturing plant near Punta Arenas, Chile, where the synthetic fuel will be produced, has begun. Porsche plans to start producing synthetic fuel at the plant next year. Initially, the plant will produce 34,000 gallons of synthetic fuel in 2022, before increasing to 14.5 million gallons by 2024 and 145 million gallons by 2026 at a cost of around $7.6 per gallon. "Porsche was founded with pioneering spirit. That's what drives us, we thrive on innovation. We also see ourselves as pioneers when it comes to renewable fuels, and we want to drive development forward. This fits in with our clear overall sustainability strategy," said Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche. "It means that Porsche as a whole can be net CO2 neutral as early as 2030. Fuels produced with renewable energy can make a contribution to this." Steiner adds that the Porsche 911 is "particularly suited to the use of eFuels," which will help keep classic Porsche cars on the road without requiring any mechanical modifications. You might not need to convert your classic Porsche 911 into an electric restomod just yet, then. However, the synthetic fuel will initially be used in Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race cars from 2022. Producing synthetic fuel will be a complicated process. Using wind power, electrolysers split water into oxygen and hydrogen. CO2 is then filtered from the air and combined with the hydrogen to produce synthetic methanol, which is then is converted into eFuel. Porsche is confident the e-Fuel will reduce carbon emissions in combustion engines by up to 90 percent.

TL:DR – A Singaporean-registered Altis and a Trans cab travel on the fast lane of the causeway, but only the Altis gets apprehended by the Malaysian police. There are no shortcuts in life. Likewise, in recent times, there have been no shortcuts on the causeway. If you’re sick and tired of waiting in the queue, you can always try your luck on the fast lane. You might get away with it, and you might not. Just like these two vehicles in the 43-second video below. What happened? A Trans Cab followed by a red Altis cuts into the car lane from the fast lane of the causeway. The Trans cab successfully merges into the queue, whereas the Altis did not have much luck as three officers eventually surrounded it. Unspoken rule I was very curious as to how the Taxi managed to evade capture. Some of my colleagues mentioned that public transport (buses and taxis) could travel on the fast lane. I even saw some comments that supported this claim. I tried to search online for material that could further support this hypothesis, but I found myself hitting dead ends. No official document from any authoritative body states that taxis are allowed to use the fast lane. So, I’m still stuck with my question of “HOW?” Maybe the comments section can enlighten me. Online Chatter It looks like netizens are as confused as I am. What is a lucky escape? Or a ‘close one eye’ situation for taxis? ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. Join us today!

https://www.ricemedia.co/how-one-magician-holds-singapores-buskers-captive/ How One Magician Holds Singapore’s Buskers Captive Jeffri Piperdy, a professional magician and busker since 2017, is about to embark on his finale in Orchard Road. His arms and upper body are bound by a straitjacket. The 23-year-old performer steps onto a plank placed atop a cylinder. Jeffri will have to free himself of his restraints while balancing on the plank. The performance draws passers-by into his audience of about 40 people. Jeffri finally manages to escape, and the crowd applauds. Audience members eye each other before walking up to Jeffri with $2 notes in their hands. His performances draw both locals and tourists in with street-side spectacle—he’s good at what he does. But there’s another secret up his sleeves. Among Singapore’s tightly-knit busking community, the name strikes a discordant note. Because Jeffri Piperdy holds the country’s buskers in fear. Source: https://www.motor1.com/news/681350/europe-seven-big-car-brands-free-fall-20-years-except-one/ As the European car market continues to change (thanks to the Tesla boom and the arrival of Chinese brands) a lot has happened to the traditional segment leaders. Europe is by definition a very competitive market with high safety/emissions standards. It is the third largest in the world, after China and the United States, and second in the adoption of electric vehicles. But who has won and who has lost in the last 20 years? Between 2003 and 2023, one of the most important moments in the European automotive market was the shift in brand dominance. The region has traditionally been led by seven major automakers: Fiat from Italy; Citroen, Peugeot, and Renault from France; Volkswagen and Opel from Germany, and Ford from the UK. In 2003 these seven brands (Opel including Vauxhall) controlled almost 58 percent of new car registrations in Europe (considering 29 markets). Their placement in their respective home markets has allowed them to occupy a relatively strong position compared to Japanese and Korean brands. For example, market share in their home markets ranged from 10 percent of Opel in Germany to 27 percent of Renault in France. While these figures were significantly lower than those of the 1990s, they were satisfying because at that time Korean brands had not yet taken off and Japanese brands were trying to win over European consumers. This started to change with the SUV boom, ushered in by the first-generation Nissan Qashqai. Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia opened plants in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, producing competitive cars that have met the taste of local motorists. The result? In 2013 the Big-7 accounted for almost 49 percent of volume in Europe, down 9 points from a decade earlier. Between 2003 and 2013, the market share lost by six of these brands varied between 0.9 points for Fiat and 4 percentage points for Renault. The only exception was Volkswagen, which increased its market share from 9.8 percent in 2003 to 12.6 percent in 2013. This year, in June, the situation for these brands was even worse. Fiat, Citroen, Opel/Vauxhall, Ford, and Peugeot hit their lowest level in 20 years. Renault placed second among the lowest market shares, after gaining 0.2 points from the full-year 2022, when it had recorded an all-time low. On the other hand, Volkswagen managed to increase its market share, or at least maintain it. With a share of 10.6 percent in the first half of 2023, it lost 2 points compared to 2013 but gained 0.8 points compared to 2003. The Dieselgate scandal was certainly offset by high-quality cars and the ability to introduce products in the right segments at the right time. Who Won? In addition to the small gain the German manufacturer recorded, the big winners over the past 20 years have been German premium brands, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, and, most recently, Tesla. All of them have something that the big European brands don't have: greater flexibility. This allows them to offer fresh products on a quicker scale that better fit the latest consumer needs. At the same time, most of them were less exposed to the European crisis than there were between 2011 and 2014, and many have used their strong global presence to save costs. Will their struggling colleagues take note?
