As you may (or may not) have noticed, the Editorial Team here at Sgcarmart has started a new series, titled Sgcarmart Explores, where we look and recommend some of the more interesting spots across the various districts of Singapore. And save for the Christmas special of the series we did last December (please do catch it here, the whole team spent an entire day out driving and shooting to craft this one), we have always started each iteration of the series questioning the assumption that Singapore is a boring place. Thank God we have yet to incur the public ire that one Malaysian actor-host Hero Tai took after making remarks to the same effect on a Taiwanese show. But the sheer amount of backlash Mr. Tai received does beg the question: Is Singapore really boring to begin with? I mean, if you've been living here for some time, I'm sure you're also finding it difficult to find new activities to join every weekend (after attending to all those spill-overs from work aside that is). Take this video for a case in point, which explores a little more about why our island’s shopping malls (the typical retreat for many of us I reckon), are so boring. I don't see many comments disagreeing with the assumption that our shopping malls here are boring. Of course, there's more to do than just shopping here in Singapore, but I think Mothership's point about how high land rents drive all malls to simply house the most economically viable tenants and thus leads to most malls sharing the same popular chains is rather important. Surely some economic forces must be at play to explain why there's so much renovation and bubble tea stores around central Toa Payoh, unless the buildings here are especially dilapidated and somehow manage to attract only contractors that must have the very best refreshments? Perhaps we simply don't have the spare space here for less economically profitable activities. So let us take the assumption that Singapore is a touch boring. Well, what now? What can we do next as a nation to bring back a bit more interest to our sunny island? Do we, perhaps, need a bit of the grime that is commonplace in other cities? I personally reckon a little bit could be the answer here. I mean, there's plenty of people out there that bemoan the loss of Hong Kong's infamous walled city. Look at this video, and the comments to it for example: I promise if you're into architecture and urban theory this channel is a treasure trove. And on a side note, why are architects so attractive? But back to the topic at hand. I'm sure many are just looking back at Kowloon's Walled City with rose-tinted glasses. After all, as the video points out, unsavoury crime, drug use, and I'm sure all manner of abuse and exploitation were also ongoing before the city was demolished. But grit, after all, is forged by enduring difficult times. Would Van Gogh have painted The Potato Eaters were it not for his witnessing of the poverty that plagued the rural peasantry of the 19th century? Or would Francisco Goya have painted the Black Paintings if he had not lived through the depravity of post-Napoleonic Spain? And to steer back to the topic at hand once again, some of Singapore's more interesting areas (by my reckoning, that is) including Chinatown, Katong, Geylang, or Tiong Bahru, to name a few, are the products of a history that has seen a fair bit of lawlessness. Perhaps some tough neighbourhoods also spawn more interesting urban landscapes. Will time alone eventually carve Sengkang a character that is entirely different from the one that is present in Punggol? I like to think not. Join us as we share more about our other interests and bring you new places to visit! So instead of always looking out for the next hot new location to visit, perhaps we ought to put in a bit of thought into preserving what we have, to ensure that our existing neighbourhoods have the time to develop a character all on their own. The recent proposal of the preservation of People's Park Complex is a move in the right direction by the authorities, but we too can show our support for the preservation of our neighbourhoods by visiting the retailers within them, and participating in activities such as this series of Heritage Trails proposed by the National Heritage Board here to send a clear message to the powers that be that these spaces are still utilised and beloved. In the same spirit, the Editorial Team is going to put in the effort and take time out of our busy schedules to populate this space with some new and alternative content (just like our new Explores series) from fields that we already know and love beyond the various automotive material already available on Sgcarmart. All we ask is that you look out for our quips about everyday life and the issues that we feel need to be more spoken for (as well as a touch of YouTube recommendations and even some photographic content), here on the blog in the coming weeks. And maybe join us in stepping out of your comfort zone, to stop simply heading to the nearest shopping centre, and support some of the alternative destinations that we highlight in our Explores series.   7. Good news for those looking to sell your car or CARS, sgCarMart Quotz has expanded and they are now available at Bukit Batok Connection. A quick search on Google Map indicates that it's near Bukit Batok Vicom Inspection Centre and also just a short driving distance away from industrial buildings like WCEGA Plaza, Midview Building, etc. Used to lunch around this area because there's a western stall selling old school chicken chop. Pretty good stuff. For those who are unfamiliar with the services of sgCarMart Quotz, here's what I gathered from reading Quotz website. How to sell your car via sgCarMart Quotz: 1 Book an appt via Quotz website. Now you have an additional choice of either Ubi or Bukit Batok branch https://www.quotz.com.sg/ 2 Drive down for comprehensive 188-point inspection (Inspection fee of $38) This will take approximately 30 mins to an hour. You can choose to rest and relax at the air-conditioned lounge (with a massage chair available lol) Your car will be up for bidding on the same day. 3 Auction to their extensive list of used car dealers You will receive the highest offer right after bidding ends. Quotz guarantees you the highest selling price in the market. Receive $100 in cash from Quotz if you are able to sell your car to a used car dealer at a higher price than their offer. 4 Transact if you're happy with the price! After the auction ends, the highest offer will be sent to you via SMS and a follow-up phone call. If you're happy with the offer, sign a digital sales agreement form and receive a deposit for your car immediately via PayNow or other means of electronic transfer. Choose to handover your car on your preferred date. From my understanding, you'll be allowed to continue driving your car for a given mileage per day till handover day. If I'm not wrong, it's limited to 80 km per day (will update this info if it's incorrect), which in my opinion, is reasonable and more than enough unless you're doing a marathon every day lol. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some of you may ask, why do you need to send your car down for an inspection before putting the car up for auction, in comparison to other online auction platforms which may even offer you a higher price just by sending across a few photos over WhatsApp. The answer is simple.   15. SINGAPORE - Consumers hoping for used car bargains will likely have to wait longer to see prices easing. While used car prices have been rising along with certificate of entitlement (COE) premiums, industry players say there are early signs of the market weakening after large car COEs breached the $100,000 mark in June. However, dealers are unwilling to drop prices on cars they had bought when the market price was high. Dealers said they have been offering higher prices to buy over used cars as the supply of used cars from new car trade-ins falls. This, in turn, translates into higher resale prices, which benefits sellers. Depreciation value reflects the basic cost of owning a car when comparing its purchase price with what it is worth at the end of its COE lifespan. In June this year, an owner of a 2018 Volkswagen Golf was offered $5,800 more than what the car was worth just three months ago by dealers on Quotz, an online bidding platform. The biggest source of used cars are trade-ins that come with new car purchases. But dealers have been going directly to owners to source for used cars, as new car registrations have fallen significantly during the current period of tight COE supply. In the first six months of 2022, there were 16,567 new car registrations, down 35.7 per cent from the 25,777 registrations seen in the same period in 2021. While fewer new cars were sold, used car transactions have been stable, with 47,480 recorded in the first six months of this year, a 1.4 per cent dip from the 48,173 seen in 2021. Since January, used cars have been selling faster than they did a year ago. At a major used car dealership, it takes less than 30 days for a car to leave its lot. In 2021, the average duration was 60 days. This suggests that more consumers are shifting to the used car market as new cars become increasingly more expensive due to rising COE prices. Dealers seem more hesitant to make higher offers for used cars as COE premiums continue to rise. Dealers are also concerned about whether buyers would be able to accept the higher used car prices. They are also wary of the risk of being caught with overly expensive cars, should COE premiums fall. This is a likely explanation for the stock situation at Sgcarmart, which is the most established player among online used car marketplaces, with more than a thousand dealers. On average, 7,000 to 8,000 used car listings are added to the portal monthly. However, its spokesman said the overall stock of cars has come down slightly since June. That is to say, its dealers are not replenishing their stock of cars as quickly as they are sold. In a widely circulated video captured by a motorist’s helmet camera video, a convoy of vehicles was seen hurtling down the CTE during the wee hours of Feb 27. Acting on the video footage, the Traffic Police conducted investigations and established the identities of the drivers. They conducted a raid on the persons involved in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with operations continuing well into the day. During the operation, nine vehicles were seized for further investigations. The men arrested were aged between 22 and 33. As part of the raid, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) allowed reporters to observe the towing of the drivers’ vehicles and the arresting of the suspected drivers. At about 7.30am at a multi-storey car park in Punggol, a red Subaru Impreza WRX that looked similar to one of the vehicles in the video was towed after officers conducted checks.

  22. In 2016, a 59-year-old Singaporean engineer drove his Nissan GT-R for 16,000 km from Singapore to the Everest Base Camp in Tibet and back. Now, the legendary vehicle is up for sale on sgCarMart! A grandfather of one, Mr Hoong, wanted to test the limits of the GT-R as stated by Nissan. The car manufacturer claimed that the vehicle is a supercar that can be driven by anyone, anytime, anywhere. Nicknamed Godzilla, the 2008 GT-R only acted up only once throughout the entire odyssey. According to the Straits Times, Mr Hoong took 22 days to arrive at the Everest Base Camp (North) with a Tibetan guide. He then took another 20 days to drive back to Singapore, clocking 16,000 km and 2,600 litres of fuel. Additionally, Mr Hoong made several modifications to the car for the journey.
