  1. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/keep-to-the-left-and-stay-alert-first-ever-code-of-conduct-for-pedestrians-kicks SINGAPORE - Pedestrians should stay off shared paths, stick to footpaths if possible and keep to the left unless they are overtaking another pedestrian. They should also refrain from using their mobile phones while walking on such paths for their own safety. These points were stated in the first-ever code of conduct here involving pedestrians, which is part of measures first proposed late last year by the Active Mobility Advisory Panel. The code of conduct for users of public paths had previously focused on device users, such as cyclists and e-scooter riders. The updated code of conduct kicked in this month, together with a new rule banning those under 16 from riding electric scooters unsupervised by adults. Another new rule bans device users from using their mobile phones while riding. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Tuesday (Aug 4) that the recommended habits for pedestrians will complement existing active mobility regulations and guidelines for other path users. "We will continue to engage and educate the public on how all can play a part in fostering a safer and more responsible path-sharing environment," said LTA. "A campaign encouraging all users to be more gracious on our paths will be rolled out at the end of the year." The code of conduct recommends these key points for pedestrians: stick to footpaths and pedestrian crossings when available beside shared paths, keep left on all paths, and stay alert when walking on paths. According to the code, pedestrians should stay alert and pay attention to their surroundings when on a footpath or shared path. They should also "refrain from using a mobile communication device or operating any of its communication or other functions - such as listening to music - in a manner as will prevent the pedestrian from detecting danger or oncoming obstacles". The various measures were proposed and introduced in response to a growing number of fires and accidents involving e-scooters last year. However, such issues have been reduced following a ban on e-scooters on footpaths, among other preventive measures. National University of Singapore transport infrastructure expert Raymond Ong said the code of conduct involving pedestrians makes sense from both a safety and an infrastructure perspective. "It makes more sense for pedestrians to keep on their paths for safety reasons... you also want pedestrians to understand that we have a huge role to play in ensuring our own safety," he said. "We don't have a lot of physical space (to create separations between paths), so it is more about shaping behaviour and trying to make the environment more conducive for walking and cycling." He said that research has shown that distracted driving, riding and movement leads to an increased risk of accidents and a pedestrian who is not distracted will be better able to avoid them. Dr Ong added that the lack of mechanisms to enforce the code of conduct is not the issue here but what is important is to educate the public. "Enforcement is something that is very reactive, but to educate and transform such that these behaviours become more like intuitive-based actions is more important," he said. But not everyone agrees with the updated code of conduct. Mr Francis Chu, the co-founder of cycling group Love Cycling SG who previously sat on the AMAP, said it was unnecessary. “Formalising keeping to the left while walking can cause some aggressive riders to shift the blame to the victim,” he said, citing a hypothetical example where in case there is an accident, a device user could blame a pedestrian for not keeping to the left. Mr Chu said certain pedestrians, such as the elderly and young children, may not be able to keep left and be alert at all times. He added that the onus should be on cyclists and PMD users to keep their device in control and ensure the safety of pedestrians. Mr Chu said: “If the main objective is safety for all path users, aren’t the two simple rules of riders giving way and keeping a safe distance from pedestrians sufficient? “It is important to not have a code of conduct for walking and ruin a relaxing walk that elderly pedestrians deserve.” With the banning of underage riding of e-scooters without supervision, the code of conduct for path users has also been updated to include a section for supervisors to refer to. Adults supervising young riders should keep to one rider at a time and have him or her clearly in their sight. They should also educate the young rider about safe riding and the relevant regulations.
  2. Singaporeans spend so much time rushing here and there, living hectic lives. Sometimes, with everything that's happening, you neglect your own safety, and, in this case, you get put to sleep by a higher power. If you watched the recent Mortal Kombat movie, the way the jaywalker flew reminds me of this scene. But I digress. Let's get right into the video. It's a sunny (風和日麗) afternoon along a 2-lane road. The right lane is congested. The cam car navigates his way to the left lane (I would too to escape waiting). The cam car speeds up on the empty left lane and "Mr Ronaldo" (I'm going to call the jaywalker Mr Ronaldo) dashes out of nowhere into the path of the cam car. "Mr Ronaldo" 👇 BAM! Ouch! What an impact. It looks painful, doesn't it? The impact is so strong that it even sends him flying and flipping before crumpling to an unconscious heap on the road. The driver does not look like it's going extremely fast as he just started picking up speed not too long before Mr Ronaldo jumped in. Think of Mr Ronaldo like a tennis ball and the cam car as a tennis racket. That's rebounding at the maximum velocity right there. Here's the full video. Your-Facebook-Video-fbdown.net.mp4 While it does not look life threatening, I wish Mr Ronaldo a quick recovery and please watch out for traffic when you cross the road! Even better still, don't jaywalk!
  3. TL;DR - Garbage truck loses control and crashes into traffic light while almost taking out a pedestrian This is exactly why you should never use your phone while crossing the road! Watch this 60-second clip to see how vigilant the pedestrian was (phew, thankfully) What happened? On April 16, a Sembcorp garbage truck lost control and caused an accident along Ganges Ave. One pedestrian narrowly avoided the collision. SGRV’s Facebook page received dashcam video of the incident, which showed a white garbage truck veering suddenly at a traffic light. The truck slammed into both the traffic light and the divider. A woman crossing the intersection managed to see the approaching truck and quickly sprinted back to the side of the road for safety. Online Chat Can’t imagine if she was distracted by her phone and whatnot… Gosh. Many netizens were commending the pedestrian, not just for her fast reflexes but also how vigilant she was. While the rest were bashing the truck driver. Of course. Is this Terminator in action? Perhaps Sembcorp should terminate him lah… Takeaway Always ensure that vehicles are stopped at the stop line and look out for traffic before crossing the road. You'll never know what goes on behind the wheels. ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. 4. TL;DR - Mazda 5 driver’s failure to obey traffic rules sent a pedestrian flying at Yuan Ching Road. This Mazda driver definitely lives up to the standard of being a ‘kiasu’ Singaporean. Watch this to see what I mean. What Happened? A (dramatic) footage surfaced on SGRV of a Mazda driver knocking down a pedestrian and sending him in the air at Yuan Ching Road. The traffic light was green for pedestrian crossing (with a significant number of seconds left) when a Mazda 5 driver decided to still drive across, thinking he could out-beat the pedestrian. Unfortunately, he did not. And this ‘kiasu’ mistake resulted in the pedestrian getting banged. The young pedestrian was cartwheeled into the air from the impact, hitting his head on the concrete as he slammed into the ground. Online Chatter As much as everyone is ‘shitting’ on the Mazda driver, some also attacked the SBS bus for dashing off and the poor victim for not being careful when crossing the road (even though it was his right of way). Oh well, it seems like everyone is at fault, one way or another. So hard to please the people. Nonetheless, wishing the pedestrian a speedy recovery. And for all road users out there, please keep your eyes on the road, regardless if you’re driving or walking. ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. 5. Have you ever encountered one of the worst nightmares a driver could ever have? No, I'm not talking about cyclists or saman aunty... I mean, dashing pedestrians! You may think I am kidding, but I am not joking. One wrong move from them, and you could easily become a murderer. See this example here: 297064227_415562567214847_4853208197817188327_n.mp4 That was close. I'm sure we all gasped in shock seeing the lady step out of nowhere like that. In case you missed it, here are extra snapshots I compiled: Nothing there. Or so we thought. And a split second later: Boo! The nastiest shock of the cam car driver's life! Thank God the cam car driver did not collide with the jaywalking pedestrian. It didn't stop there, however. Here's the worst part - the pedestrian did not learn her lesson. She stubbornly attempted to dash out onto the unsuspecting incoming traffic yet again... My goodness, can you believe the sheer foolhardiness? The utter audacity. Instead of learning her lesson, she blatantly ignored what had almost transpired and decided to charge back in🤦‍♂️ Netizens weigh in Many commentators had some choice words to say. Yes, we too, are speechless. I am betting this isn't her first rodeo. Unpopular Opinion: The presence of the bus indirectly contributed to the near-miss accident, but you should always check your blind spots, pedestrian or driver! Yes, this person said what we were all thinking. SMH! Being mindful all day keeps the hospital bills away! For pedestrians, if you don't want to: 1) get a fright; and 2) be scolded online like this pedestrian did, always look left and right before you cross! ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news, and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. 6. "Red light stop, green light go" is a basic and universal traffic rule. Heck. Even if you live under a rock, the viral Netflix show 'Squid Game' would have taught you otherwise. Sadly, two 'ah-bengs' and one of their 'zha-bor' simply couldn't understand this simple traffic rule and got into multiple confrontations with a lorry driver. Watch it here: What Happened? Two 'ah-bengs' and a woman blatantly jaywalked in front of oncoming traffic at Victoria Road. The lorry they obstructed honked them for their blatant disregard for road safety. And boy, oh boy, did that honk shatter both their fragile ego. Compensating For Their Shattered Ego Both 'ah-bengs' immediately gestured at the lorry driver with their hands to signal to the lorry driver, "What's your problem?!" 'Ah-beng' #1 in the long pants, then threw a lit cigarette at the lorry, but it rebounded and hit him in the face. Meanwhile, ah-beng' #2 in shorts made an intimidating action of wanting to 'rush' towards the lorry, only to be held back by his 'zha-bor'. As the lorry drove down the road slowly, 'ah-beng' #1 continued walking alongside the lorry while shouting at the driver. Just then, he suddenly jumps and attempts to spit inside the lorry, only to lose his balance and fall ass-first onto the road. NGL, it is hilarious that he acts all tough but can't do something as simple as jumping without falling over. The lorry driver then proceeded to stop at the curbside and settle with those uncouth beings. Unfortunately, what happened afterwards remain unknown, as the video ends after the lorry driver opens his door. A Lesson To Learn A takeaway from this incident would be to get yourself a woman who stops you from doing stupid shit. Unless, of course, your woman is a 'Karen' like the one in this viral incident: In that case, GLHF! You might end up getting arrested for doing stupid shit like the Bentley driver. Netizens' Comments 🤷‍♂️ In a nutshell. You never hear meh? Bentley driver kena arrested liao. ======== Receive a $10 PayNow for every submission we publish on Facebook! 7. Amidst all the tragic car accidents happening lately, here's some heart-warming news. This lorry driver's considerate actions spared both the motorist and the old lady from a fatal crash. Like the lorry driver, do look out for other road users and especially the elderly – we must proteccc those that we can. So on the 17th Feb, around 8AM on Clementi Avenue 2, this Chinese auntie nearly let herself get run down by a motorist because she jaywalked in front of a lorry. The lorry uncle quickly shot his hands out of the window to alarm the motorist, who braked just! in! time! Its not the fault of the motorist, but do I blame the auntie? Her senses likely dulled with age so I can't really fault her... but auntie, you almost caused an accident! Very scary you know! You can tell the auntie really didn't think things through. She was shocked and even stumbled back a bit. Thankfully, the lorry driver's senses were sharp and alert. By signalling, he demonstrated exemplary road user behaviour – super considerate to other road users??? What a KING. I can't stress this enough. Someone get him a beer! Or a cape! ^ What they said! The motorist didn't do anything wrong, he was just minding his business. She wasn't supposed to cross like that. The truck gave the motorist a blind spot as well – can we appreciate the motorist for reacting fast too? Anyway, we need to protect these unthinking elderlies... sigh. Stay alert and help where you can, for a little goes a long way!!! Putting this gif here again to serve as a good reminder. I still can't get over what a close call this was. One second late and the consequences would've been horrifying.
  8. Do me a favour, please watch the video first before reading past this first sentence, this way, you will understand the context of what is going on. Turn your sound on too. 41860487_462079431454648_3710982132141643689_n.mp4 Done? Great. So, the actions of the driver in the camera car. Necessary, or just plain idiotic and rude? Yes, the uncle at the traffic light did seem a little blur and started crossing the road, rather slowly too, after the red man came on. Yes, this traffic light along Victoria Street is notorious for heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic, as seen in the video where people are not done crossing the road even as the red man comes on. Perhaps let's cut the uncle some slack? Maybe he wasn't paying attention or just having an off day. Or on the other hand, he is really lacking spatial awareness and nearly got himself killed. Understandably, the driver in the camera car could've not honked so long and scared the uncle half out of his slippers. A double tap of his horn would've been suffice, plus the other cars around the camera car don't seemed to have moved off either. And also being so eager to leave the lights. Where are you rushing off to, bro? But then again, this writer daresays that both parties are in the wrong in this incident. The uncle for not being observant of the traffic light and taking his own sweet time to cross, and the driver for being extremely heavy handed with his horn. Although the driver should be more conscious on his acceleration. Yes, this writer knows that most of us can't tolerate stupid people, but do remember that if you as a driver hits a pedestrian, it's not going to just be demerit points, man. Like most things in life, a little patience doesn't kill, people. You would think people would've remembered that by now but no.......
  9. A mobile phone has been hurt as a result of this unfortunate accident between a van and a pedestrian along Sophia Road heading towards Wilkie Road on 11th of September. As we can see from this video posted onStomp and ROAD.sg, the driver of this Nissan van seemed to be distracted and was not paying attention to where he was heading, knocking a poor pedestrian hard from the back. Clearly, the van driver is at fault here... According to the police, the 40-year old pedestrian was conscious when conveyed to Raffles Hospital. He could be seen clutching his head as the video was about the end. We hope all is well for him. And his phone! 52576251_174470654273041_5621453545594435322_n.mp4
  10. A very blurry video has been uploaded on Roads.sg's Facebook page. It hasn't gone viral yet (at the time of writing this article) but, there's a massive potential for it to explode online. Help me out here people. I'm very divided about this one. It's a short 25-second video of a driver attempting to drive through a pedestrian crossing when the green man indicator is lit. This action angers an Ang Moh pedestrian and a clash of egos ensue. If you haven't seen the video, here you go! Thanks, Roads.sg The driver’s perspective There's a noticeable gap/window for cars to drive through the pedestrian crossing even though you can see the blinking green man. The two vehicles in front of him went through with no issues. If it's safe to go through, why not right? The pedestrian’s perspective The Ang Moh pedestrian who came running up to stop the driver from proceeding must have felt that the driver was too impatient and should have just waited a little while longer before making the turn. Clash of egos The pedestrian then proceeds to block the driver until the green man turns red before walking out of frame. You’ve made your point, move along lah! Why need to do this? This isn't Hong Kong eh! The driver, on the other hand, keeps saying that "he has a camera". Pretty pointless statement in this case no? Can you see why I feel divided on this? What the people say Next day newspaper headlines: "Body of man found swimming with the fishes" Probably a joke. Probably. The injustice of it all still lingers in the hearts of many like the death of Harambe. I guess, in the eyes of the public, we know whose side they're on. The driver needs a better dashcam though.
  11. Today is the 1st time I am so involved with an traffic accident (don't worry, I am not hit or affected in anyway). I just crossed the road, walking away from the T-junction between Boon Lay Way and Jurong West Central 2, when I heard a loud bang behind me. Turning around and I saw a Toyota Altis mounting the kerb and moving onto the walkway next to it. A few meters away on the extreme right lane of the road, a Honda Fit Hybrid came to a abrupt stop against the kerb, with fume coming out from it bonnet. I immediately headed towards the Altis, which was closer to me, to check out the occupant in it. The driver stepped out of his car, filled with white smoke from the airbags activation, and immediately seated on the walkway, appearing dazy. I asked if he is ok, whether he need any assistance, etc. By then, many onlookers started to crowd around the car, taking photos and kaypoing. I asked if anyone has called the police and all kept quiet. So I dialed 999 and report the accident to the officer on the phone (I will share the details later), and request for ambulance to be dispatch (as one foreign worker pointed out to me that the other driver might need assistance). After asking the onlookers to clear away from the driver, I ran cross road to check out the occupant of the Fit. The driver limped out of his car (again, it was filled with white smoke from the airbag activation) and half laying against the kerb, complaining of chest pain and breathing difficulty. I told him to try breathing in harder and that he should lie down if he is feeling really uncomfortable. I called 999 again, to update them the conditions of both drivers, and was told ambulance is on the way (that is fast, as everything happened within just ~2 min). By then, 2 foreign workers came forward to offer bottled water to the driver, which I stopped them, for medical reasons, but the driver still proceed to take a sip of it, before I manage to snatch it away, explaining to him of the medical implication (of get choked and such).

  13. You should know................................
  14. What is the correct way to do so? I normally wait for the people to cross then I go, but so long as the people have not crossed the Center divider on a dual carriage way, I will turn.is that the right way? Or do I have to wait for them to cross completely regardless of where they are? Reason for asking is that I see enforcement officers taking a video camera on a tripod pointing at the crossings twice in a week.
  15. Im wondering how to make our Gov wake up their mind. Its not the 1st time I came across such news, in fact, such case happened to 1 of my close buddy at AMK. It obvious case that its the pedestrian fault and why driver tio charge until so jialat? Is Gov trying to encourage the pedestrian to be more careless as they are protected by law no matter what? I undestand that the jaywalker already deceased and I shouldnt rubbing salt on others wound but I really pity the driver... he is the actual innocent fellow here. I hope government could be more fair when handling such cases. Dont give people the wrong impresssion and continue to try their luck on the road. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/fine-driving-ban-for/1330614.html SINGAPORE: A 77-year-old retiree was fined S$7,000 and banned from driving for five years on Tuesday (Aug 26) for causing the death of a pedestrian through his negligence. Willie Chan York Jen pleaded guilty to causing the death of 75-year-old Mr Mohamed Ibrahim Yusoff while driving along Lorong 2 Toa Payoh at the cross junction of Lorong 6 Toa Payoh on Dec 21 last year. At about 5.45pm that day, Chan was driving along Lorong 2 Toa Payoh and heading towards the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) on his way home after playing badminton with friends. He stopped at a red light while travelling on the four-lane road at Lorong 2 Toa Payoh. When the traffic light turned green in his favour, he proceeded to drive straight across the cross junction. He did not see Mr Ibrahim, who began crossing the road when the red-man traffic signal was displayed. Chan failed to keep a proper lookout and Mr Ibrahim was hit by the front right corner of his car. Mr Ibrahim sustained head injuries, and was bleeding from the mouth and became short of breath. He fell unconscious and was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he died later that night. Chan could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined for causing death through a negligent act.
  16. From the originator of daylight running LED brings you the new Matrix LED headlights. The new technology, which projects the high beam more precisely, will debut on the 2014 facelifted Audi A8. Audi's latest innovation consists of LED high beam headlights that are split into numerous individual, small diodes working in conjunction with lenses or reflectors connected in series. They are activated or dimmed separately. The new headlights work in tandem with a camera to block out light aimed at oncoming and preceding vehicles while continuing to light up other zones. The optional 'marker lights' flashes at pedestrians in the critical range in front of the car three times in succession. Lastly, the lights also have a cornering function that targets the emphasis of the beam towards the direction of the bend. When the auto headlights function is on, the system is activated from 30km/h on highways and from 60km/h on city streets. According to Audi, the light that the driver sees is always bright, homogeneous and much more effective than that produced by competitors' mechanical dipping systems.

  18. Came across this news from google and wanted to take this oportunity to educate my kids.... but ended up as a minor flame war in my family My daughter asked me that why is the lorry driver penalised when he follow the traffic rules (drive off after green light)? Its very obvious th its the pedestrian fault since she was so far away from the pedestrian crossing... My wife explained to her that the driver should keep a look out of the pedestrian when driving.... I do not agree with my wife and told her that the pedestrian should not assume that all drivers could see them cause there are many other things that the driver need to pay attention with, afterall, its the pedestrian own safety and if they dont care, who else would?? ... My wife buay song after hearing what i said and the argument started,..... ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________ http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...608-351433.html A lorry driver has been jailed for one week and banned from driving for three years for causing the death of a pedestrian, reported The Straits Times. He made a right turn when the lights turned green and ended up hitting Madam Han Ai Lian, 61, who was crossing about six metres away from the pedestrian crossing line. The Straits Times reported that she died two days later from bleeding due to blunt force injury to the pelvis and left lower limb. Madam Han was on her way to work as a cleaner at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard. Muhammad Jufri pleaded guilty to the accident. Be a safe cyclist

I was going to Bedok Central for lunch on a weekday. I parked my car at the open carpark next to Block 416 and made my walk to the traffic lights at Bedok North Street 1, opposite Bedok Community Library. After waiting for about 30 seconds, the green man appeared and I crossed the road. Upon reaching the other end of the road, the side of my eye caught a speeding bicycle approaching in my direction when other vehicles have stopped. Naturally, I slowed down my pace to avoid getting hurt. After the incident, I asked myself this question
  21. 22. Hi folks, Today's Friday, just some light hearted banter. Well, I was jogging around my estate yesterday. It was a rare chance which I could get home by 0645 so I decided that keeping fit was the prerogative. As it is a off work peak hour, there were many cars coming home from work as well as walking to (potong pasir) MRT cutting thru Sennett estate (where I stay). Just wanted to share some observations: 1) Opposed to common belief, drivers of luxury/sports/performance cars are actually more polite than bread and butter cars. I had 2 occasions where a 7 series beemer and a FD2R stopped for me to jog pass before continuing to reverse into their houses. Inversely, there were too many occasions of rude drivers of Mazda 3/Sunny/Vios/Jazz/Latio/Koup... who.... a) horn at me loudly to give way even though I was jogging along the side walk b) honk impatiently when the GREEN man is on (sorry, obviously I cannot run faster than your puny engine) c) Rev their (tiny) engines while I jogged across them probably to show that they "have arrived" ~ losers (this is limited to those chingay family cars with loud bodykits and stickers) d) Talk on the phone - yes handphone driving To be fair of course, the high ratio of misbehaving bread and butter cars is due to the huge number of them on the roads compared to "better" cars. 2) Girls... especially the OLs in office shirts/jackets/ etc and Ah lian "PMEBs" - - very funny observations - When they see a sweating guy jogging pass, they will give you the looks as if you were some dirty bangala worker or hum sup trash. The look is often that of distain (as if get lost, you stinking low class idiot) or (hey, dun come near me and try molest me!!) - Female factory workers however (some are just as pretty or prettier than the OLs no joke) do not show this act of superiority... When I jog pass, they either remain status quo or they will flash a friendly smile... Education is killing off humility in our society?? 3) Dogs - they love to bark loudly when you jog pass but when you stop and stare at them, they will keep quiet and go away (reminds me of some colleagues at work...) That's all folks!! TGIF . . . cheers
