  6. Hi guys just a warning on buying Apple Care. I bought my Macbook almost 3 years ago(Apple care warranty till March 2013). I just sent my Mac in for repair and they say that there are signs of Water Damage. The proof they say is that some parts are corroded. As such the warranty is void and the repair bill is 1200. Do the think I'm stupid? BTW I never spilled any water on the Mac. This will be the last time I will EVER buy ANY APPLE product. Also note that there has been a lot of this claim of water damage by Apple so that they will VOID the warranty.

  9. LINK SHANGHAI : A Chinese pilot's refusal to give up his landing slot to a passenger plane that issued a distress call to say it was running out of fuel almost caused a disaster, state media reported Thursday. China's privately-owned Juneyao Airlines confirmed that one of its pilots refused to give way when a Qatar Airways plane contacted air traffic controllers at Hongqiao airport, asking permission to land immediately. The pilot of the Qatar plane said it had just five minutes' worth of fuel left after it was diverted from Shanghai, the Global Times newspaper reported, adding that a disastrous accident was only narrowly averted. The Qatar plane was travelling from Doha to Shanghai when it was ordered to divert due to a thunderstorm on August 13. Air traffic controllers in Hongqiao, about 45 kilometres (30 miles) from Shanghai, ordered the Juneyao pilot to circle the airport and allow the Qatar plane to land first, but the pilot refused. The Global Times said the Juneyao pilot claimed he had been waiting "a long time" and needed to land "right now", citing comments posted online. Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines, which was founded in 2005, said the pilot and crew had been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, but that the "rumours on the Internet are far from the truth". "It remains doubtful whether the fuel on the Qatar Airways plane was really fewer than five minutes," the paper quoted a spokeswoman as saying. "And why didn't it inform the tower controller earlier?" At one point, the two aircraft came perilously close for there to be a risk of collision, according to an aviation forum quoted in The Global Times. "A Mayday is rare and means the plane is in an extreme emergency and may even face the danger of a crash," the paper quoted an unnamed senior air traffic control official as saying. China's civil aviation authority said in a statement it was investigating the incident and those responsible would be "severely punished". The Qatar plane landed safely after the incident. - AFP/ir
  10. On Sat morning, I drove my Citroen Berlingo van which was fitted with 4x175/65R14 MICHELIN tyres all the way from Sengkang to Hougang SPC to have my tyres check by their so called 'FREE professional tyre check by MICHELIN.' When I reached there, nobody approached me n I went over to one of the guys. He told me that they only checked cars tyres. So I asked him is it my van tyres not from MICHELIN? He told me my tyres are from factory??? I dun understand what crap reason he's giving me. Reaching home, I found the advt which I'd printed and called the distributor no. found there to verify. Later, the same guy called me back n insisted that they only check cars which was the instruction given by MICHELIN office. Still not satisfied, I scrutinized every word from the advt but there's no mention that the free check is only for cars. I'm not even driving a lorry or truck! I suspect that their FREE check is only for non Michelin customers to convince them to change to Michelin tyres during their next tyre change n ignore those that have already bought their tyres. If not, why did they refuse to check my normal fitted size tyres which can be easily found in tyres shops that sell their tyres? Well, to MR MICHELIN and company or Mr O_Kewl forumer(I believe u r working in Michelin), pls give me a better explanation than those given to me above. I suppose this will be the last time I'll be purchasing their tyres if that is how they treat their existing customers! 15. MOE seriously need to review their recruitment criteria for teachers. i fear for my non-elite children. ================================================================== http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-fwS52dHIvM/S6H9...-h/P1030784.JPG Summary of the column: It is the reflection of a principal/HOD, on meeting a new teacher freshly graduated from NIE, who refused to teach in a neighbourhood school and had immediately asked for a transfer after learning of the posting. His excuse -- (which I find laughable) is because of his 'elite' background. "I am from XX Junior College, I would not be able to adapt to such an environment (with a lot of problem students)". The principal/teacher, naturally, was shocked, and expressed that he "did not expect that a new teacher will despise them and avoid teaching them." People like these give students who have had the privilege of studying in 'elite' schools a bad name. Anyway, this is the translated text off his blog: Hearing that a new teacher, recently graduated from NIE, will be posted to my school, I eagerly waited in my office for him, expecting to have a succesor who will share with me the noble mission of education. Expecting him to be full of youthful drive and idealism since this was his first job, I immediately started to brief the new teacher about his job scope when he arrived. However, I realised that he was unusually quiet and expressionless. He slowly explained: "Sorry, I will be posted to another school in two days' time. I have already requested for a transfer from MOE; I am now awaiting the re-posting". "Oh, I see!" I was greatly puzzled; why was he applying for a transfer when he have not even started work at the school? He explained with great honesty: "When I received the notification that I will be posted to this school, I immediately went to apply for a transfer with the HR department. I have heard that neighbourhood schools, such as this school, have a lot of 'problem students'. I am from XX Junior College, I would not be able to adapt to such an environment". A prestigious graduate of an elite school cannot teach in a neighbourhood school? I was greatly saddened for the sake of my neigbourhood school and for the sake of the many "problem students" under my charge. Admittedly, they are a misbehaving lot: fooling around during lessons, not handing in assignments, playing truant, getting into fights, smoking and even drug-taking; they are in greater need of education and rehabilitation. But I did not expect that a new teacher will despise them and avoid teaching them. On the first day of school, being unable to get his request for a transfer approved, the new teacher still reported to work. This was what I expected! Barring you having "special connections", which employer will allow you to freely choose where you want to work at? After a few days, he came to my office, dejectedly saying: "I am about to have a mental breakdown, I cannot tolerate the students' misbehaviour anymore. I want to quit, I do not want to fritter away my life, I do not mind contravening my contract and paying reparations..." After my initial shock, I replied: "Young man, you are very fortunate to be able to enjoy being educated in 'elite' schools since young, to have a good family and schooling environment, to live in such a protected and happy environment and not come into contact with those from another socio-economic milieu. Before coming to this school, I was also unaware that Singapore has so many low income families which are struggling to survive. 60% of the students here have parents whom only have primary school education, 30% of them come from single-parent families; having a hard life, these children already have a bad starting point and live in a maladjusted environment, thus bringing all kinds of bad habits and problems to school. Hence, in order to bring them onto the correct path, we need to approach and teach them with greater love and patience". At this point in time, an expression of doubt and shock was on the new teacher's face. I told him: "Go see a doctor and take a few days' break. When you have considered carefully and made a decision, then come and discuss with me". Unfamiliar with the purpose of education and unaware of the hardships of being a teacher, this new teacher has entered into the world of teaching. Was this because he was attracted to the high salaries in the teaching service or was he unable to find another job due to the economic recession? In the end, the new teacher did not resign. However, a year later, he was transferred to an "elite" school to teach a "gifted" class; perhaps "elites" are more compatible with "gifted" people. Yet, if every teacher was like him, who will educate the students in neighbourhood schools?

  17. Hi all, need some advice. I got into an accident just now but the other party refuse to provide his NRIC but provided his handphone number. We agreed verbally to settle ourselves, he will fix his own car and i will fix mine, without involving insurance as premium will be higher. Should I go and make a police report and detail down our conversation and forward the report to the insurance so that in future, the other party will not be able to make a claim from me? If i do that, will the insurance be higher next year?
  18. Story from here: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singapor...nt.jsp?id=41059 http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews...1104-98291.html He explains why he didn't give up seat to pregnant woman Desperate times call for depraved measures. The financial crisis might have hurt more than just our wallets. Last Sunday an ugly train commuter did not give up his seat to a pregnant woman, and went as far as to explain his selfish choice by saying, "Why should I reward the pregnant woman for bringing one more life into the world?" In an email to STOMP yesterday, the STOMPer who came across this disturbing scene said,"This man refused to give up his seat for a pregnant woman on the MRT yesterday at around 3pm. "When asked to give up his seat, he said, 'Life is already full of suffering, why should I reward her (the pregnant woman) for bringing one more life into this world?' "I took a photo of him after he said that, and he had the cheek to flash a peace sign as I was doing so. "At this point, the guy seated next to this unreasonable man got up and offered his seat." In times like these when a pregnant woman's privilege is turned into punishment, one wonders,"Have Singaporeans sunk to a new low of commuter courtesy?
  19. Drivers refuse to slow down at crossing for special ed kids http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singapor...nt.jsp?id=32476 From the video it seems some of the cars appear to be travelling quite fast. Maybe they should just construct strips before the crossing and a higher hump.
  20. Source: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20080421/tts-...ec-c1b2fc3.html AFP - Monday, April 21 ROME (AFP) - - Oil-producing countries have rejected calls to raise output amid record prices -- five times higher in as many years -- saying the rise in demand was artificial. Kuwait's acting oil minister said Sunday that supply and demand factors are not to blame for the soaring price of crude oil, which hit record highs above 117 dollars per barrel in New York last week, following a pipeline attack in Africa's biggest producer Nigeria. "The level of stockpiles does not currently affect prices on the world market," Mohammad al-Olaim said on the sidelines of an energy forum in Rome attended by oil-producing countries, companies and consumer nations. "The fundamentals do not affect the market," he said. "If there is a need to raise" production, ministers of OPEC -- of which Kuwait is a member -- "will make a decision," he added. Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) president Chakib Khelil, currently touring Kuwait, said there was no need for an immediate hike in production. He said the cartel, responsible for producing around 40 percent of the world's oil, "does not need to raise output in the near future," according to Kuwait's KUNA news agency. "Today, there is no need to get worked up and say, 'We must put more oil on the market', because the demands of oil consumers are probably motivated by political reasons," said Saudi Oil Minister Ali-al Naimi. "We have raised output over last year and the prices have continued to climb," he told the Petroleum Argus, an oil industry weekly. Calls for OPEC to raise output were distinctly muted, even if the deputy head of the International Energy Agency -- founded during the 1973-4 oil crisis to defend the energy interests of 27 major consumer countries -- said it was "unreasonable" for the 12 members of OPEC's cartel to "fix demand for the next 30 years". William Ramsey later softened his position to say that "asking for more fuel today maybe isn't the answer," spelling out that that IEA is primarily asking producers to "increase their production capacity". "I think that prices are going to continue to rise," said Libya's acting oil minister Chukri Ghanem, the head of its national oil company. The Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia, said they did not like the price spiral. A Gulf official told AFP: "we don't like to see the prices at these (high) levels". Nevertheless, he did not give the slightest hint of any measures OPEC could enact to make prices fall again. OPEC Secretary General Abdullah al-Badri reiterated Saturday that ministers from OPEC member states did not need to meet separately in Rome. Khelil, for his part, said the falling value of the US dollar was responsible for the surge in prices. "When the dollar loses one percent, the price of a barrel of oil rises by four dollars," he said.
